Alice’s trip to Santorini
Santorini had always been on my bucket list of destinations to go to – the white-washed buildings, blue-domed churches and spectacular sunsets (not to mention the thousands of photo opportunities!) are all what prompted me to finally book a long awaited holiday there last September.
It really does live up to those postcard photo expectations, and it’s no surprise to me that it’s claimed to be one of the most beautiful Greek Islands with people returning year after year – I can’t wait to get back! However, if it’s your first time on a new island (or any destination for that matter), knowing where to eat, what to do or any of the other questions you find yourself asking the week before you depart can sometimes add unnecessary stress. So, if you’re thinking about heading to Greece soon, here is my run down of all things Santorini!
Take a Catamaran to the Hot Springs
This was the highlight of my whole holiday! 6 hours lying in the sun, riding waves as we sailed past some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen (and we even saw a dolphin swim alongside us!). With three swimming stops, a free bar and lunch included, it really was the best way to see the whole island. My favourite swim stop had to be the Hot Springs. It’s one of Santorini’s most popular attractions and it didn’t disappoint. The waters of the Hot Springs are 35C and are rich in iron and manganese, not to mention that sulphur treatments in spas around the world are usually expensive, but swimming in the hot Springs is completely free – just remember if you swim in the Hot Springs wear swimming wear you don’t care about – the water is rich in sulphur which can stain – but it’s totally worth it! You could even book a tour to Nea Kameni Island, visit the National Geological Park, hike the volcano of the island, and stop off for a swim after. However, you choose to explore this area is up to you, but it’s a definite must!
Visit Oia to watch the sunset
Another must do, is to witness a spectacular sunset, I recommend you travel to Oia, situated at the tip of the island. Oia is the iconic town in Santorini – you’ve probably seen it in photos and postcards, the white buildings and blue domed roofs look exactly the same in person. I always got a taxi into Oia from Fira, which was about 25 euros. They drop you right outside as it is a pedestrian-only town – which is part of the charm! You need some comfy shoes and prepare yourself to make your way through on foot. If you’re going there to watch the sunset, you probably want to grab some dinner afterwards and I have the perfect recommendation! Sunset in Ammoundi Taverna (the view pictured above) is stunning and the food is second to none. Sit right on the edge and witness spectacular views over the crystal blue sea whilst indulging in some of the best sea food I’ve ever had (especially the calamari!)
Explore the Capital of Fira
Fira is the largest town in Santorini and offers some of the best views of the caldera. It’s full of souvenir shops, restaurants and bars. If you want to watch the sunset in Santorini from a different location and over a delicious cocktail, I have the perfect place for you! PK cocktail bar is spread over three levels overlooking the caldera with the finest wines, spirits and champagnes. I could have spent every night watching the sunset from here with a drink in hand. I also loved just walking the streets and discovering new places. I even went on a hike right to the bottom of the old cruise port and then jumped in the cable car back up, which was an incredible experience – the views were amazing!
Spend a day relaxing on the black sand beach
There’s more to Santorini than just the whitewashed buildings and spectacular sunsets. The black sand beach of Perissa is something like I’ve never seen before. And what’s more, it’s right on the doorstop of our ClubSolso property! With tavernas lining the huge stretch of sand and plenty of sunbeds for rent – you can order food straight to your bed on the beach! Don’t forget though, because the sand is black, it gets hot!! So don’t forget your sandals.
Eat and drink as much as you can!
Greece might be widely known for its fascinating history, enchanting islands and magnificent weather, it also has some of the tastiest food I’ve ever had. From bread and olive oil to a traditional Greek Salad, not to mention all the fresh seafood and late-night gyros! You’ll be eating and drinking so much – but that’s the point of a holiday isn’t it?
Santorini is definitely worth visiting! Regardless of whether you’ve been before (I will be going back again!) or you’re planning to visit for the first time, you won’t be disappointed.
