About this holiday
Set in the stunning Zillertal Valley,
the charming resort of Mayrhofen
has long been a favourite among
British skiers and boarders. Not
only does it have a vast, well
connected ski area, which includes
the snowsure Hintertux glacier,
but it’s also known as one of the
liveliest après-ski resorts in Europe.
The majority of the skiing taking
place on two separate, sunny
plateaux - the Penken and the
Ahorn, both of which are accessible
from the village centre. In addition,
the Zillertal Superskipass covers
the whole of the Ziller Valley,
including the resorts of Fügen,
Kaltenbach, Zell am Ziller, Gerlos,
Finkenberg, Lanersbach and the
glacier at Hintertux - offering a total
of over 487km of pistes and 168
lifts connected by a free bus
There’s something for everybody
here. For beginners, the lessons
take place around the mid station
at Finkenberg, where the excellent
ski school is based and there are
plenty of gentle runs to find your ski
legs on. Intermediates will enjoy the
slopes on the Penken, Mayrhofen’s
intermediate mountain, where there
are red runs galore, as well as the
wide blue runs at Kaltenbach and
some scenic tree-lined reds.
For advanced skiers, there are
challenging runs down the Penken
Mountain to Schwendau and
through the trees from the Ahorn.
The Horberg ski area also offers
a number of exciting long runs
such as the challenging Schafskopf
mogul run, and if you feel like a
real challenge, try what the resort
markets as “the steepest groomed
run in Austria” – called, not
surprisingly, Hara Kiri. It is indeed
steep, but is short enough that an
accomplished intermediate could
also tackle it.
The resort itself is one of the most
picturesque in Austria, with all
its buildings being of traditional
Tyrolean chalet design. There are
excellent shops and a fantastic
range of restaurants, bars and clubs
that really liven up in the evenings.
