To get the best advice, sometimes you need to speak to the experts! We caught up with Nick Fletcher, Tour Leader for many of our golf holidays and self-proclaimed golf-addict, to find out which courses and holes he rates as the best in Europe.

1) Vale Do Lobo Algarve, Portugal

Royal Course, Par 72

Set amidst towering pine trees and speckled with lakes and wildflowers, the Royal Golf Course offers players wonderful clifftop views of the coastline below. In use since 1997, it was designed by Rocky Roquemore, a top American golf architect, but was based on the original drawings of Sir Henry Cotton.

Nick’s favourite hole: 16th, Par 3 – one of the most photographed holes in Europe! The Atlantic Ocean is on your left, and the tee points you out over the beach and clifftop.

2) Son Vida, Mallorca

Golf Son Vida, Par 71

Surrounded by subtropical lush gardens and beautiful coastal views of the Bay of Palma, Son Vida Mallorca was the first course to be built on the island. Having famously hosted the European Tour twice, this traditional course has become a legend amongst golfers from all over Europe.

Nick’s favourite hole: 18th for sure. It’s a tough Par 5, with lots of water to throw you off.

3) Cornelia Deluxe, Turkey

The Nick Faldo Tiberius course, Par 72

Designed by Sir Nick Faldo, this course has 27 holes and is currently ranked as the fifth best course in Turkey. Carved through a picturesque pine forest, with a dramatic ridge of dunes running through the middle, this course has all the components for a great round of golf.

Nick’s favourite hole: ‘Faldo’s choice’ on the Tiberius course. It’s a short Par 4, but watch out for the trees protecting the green!

4) Quinta do Vale Algarve, Portugal

Quinta do Vale Algarve Course, Par 72

Designed by Severiano Ballesteros and sitting in a natural valley, this course offers beautiful views over the Guadiana River. Numerous dogleg holes, wide fairways and obstacles, and plenty of water makes this potentially the toughest first 7 holes in the Algarve.

Nick’s favourite hole: 18th, Par 4. It’s a short downhill with water in front of the green.

5) Islantilla, Spain

Yellow Course, Par 72

Set within a pine forest and boasting impressive sea views, the 27 holes at Islantilla give players the opportunity to play three different 18 hole combinations. Each course hosts a good variety of holes, including fast greens, narrow tree-lined fairways and tricky over-water shots, but the Yellow Course is perfect for golfers with a high handicap.

Nick’s favourite hole: 8th, Par 4. A good drive should leave you with a Mid-Iron into the green, but hit it sweet or you will be fishing your ball out of the pond that protects the green!

6) Aphrodite Hills, Cyprus

Aphrodite Hills Course, Par 70

Spread out over 6,289 metres and overlooking the site where Aphrodite is said to have emerged from the sea, this golf course was recently named the European golf resort of the year. The course expands through indigenous olive and carob trees and gives players outstanding views over the Mediterranean.

Nick’s favourite hole: 7th, Par 3. It’s a long buggy drive between the sixth green and the seventh tee, but it’s worth it! Try it off the white tees…

7) El Rompido, Spain

South Course, Par 72

Surrounded by pine and olive trees, El Rompido’s South Course can be played easily on foot and offers spacious greens known to be among the fastest in Andalusia. The combination of tropical and winter grass give the fairways a comfortable feel.

Nick’s favourite hole: The 12th hole on the South Course, Par 4, is a very challenging drive.

8) Penina Algarve, Portugal

The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, Par 73

A true championship course, and the first 18-hole course to be built in the Algarve, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course is regarded by many as the finest course in the Algarve and beyond. Complete with water hazards, tree lined fairways and many bunkers, this is a course that presents a challenge to even the most skilful of golfers.

Nick’s favourite hole: 13th, Par 3. You have to stay right; it’s all water on the left!

9) Quinta de Cima, Portugal

The Cima Course, Par 72

Another great championship course, The Cima is suitably flat, but with lots of water and sand hazards. Set in a beautiful location flanked by olive, carob and orange trees, this course is paradise for golfers who value spending time in nature.

Nick’s favourite hole: 16th, Par 5. This tricky hole comes with a dog leg, ditch and lake to navigate.

10) Isla Canela, Spain

Isla Canela Course, Par 72

Nestled in the countryside, Isla Canela is a relatively short, flat course that’s easy to walk around. It’s a good test for golfers of all standards, with excellent quality greens and a number of interesting water features to add to the challenge.

Nick’s favourite hole: 4th, Par 4. It’s a difficult drive, followed by a big decision to go or to lay up!
