In light of the ski season we spoke to Greg Page, Solos Tour Leader for many of our activity and ski holidays, about why he loves tour leading skiing holidays, his favourite destinations and his insatiable appetite for life.

So what does it mean to be a Tour Leader, Greg?

Every customer comes to Solos as an individual, but what they all have in common is that they’re here to enjoy their holiday. My role is the meet everyone’s expectations as personally as possible, to keep an eye on everything and generally make sure every trip runs smoothly. I’m also there to keep the group informed on timings, what there is to do and optional excursions.

How long have you been doing this then?

Decades! It feels like I’m part of a family now. Having been with Solos for so long, it’s always such a pleasure meeting customers who keep coming back to spend a week with me. It’s a great way of catching up with old friends.

What did you do before becoming a Tour Leader?

I’ve had quite an exciting life! I’ve worked overseas for 20 years and lived in 14 countries. I started off as a chartered accountant in London, but then used it to travel the world. This led to me being based in Switzerland for 5 years, becoming a commercial helicopter pilot in the States and working in property development in Moscow. I also made a film in Ireland and ran a major hotel in Baton Rouge, Louisiana which was an amazing experience. I thought my travels and experiences lent themselves perfectly to being a Solos Tour Leader.

It certainly does! So what sort of tours do you lead now?

I’ve done them all: skiing, walking, cruises, Discovery tours, city breaks, beach holidays, cycling holidays and black tie balls, but my favourite tours to lead are skiing, walking and city break holidays. I find that with activity holidays, especially skiing, people find it a lot easier to connect because there’s a common bond. And that’s lovely to watch.

I can imagine. What else do you like about tour leading ski holidays?

I get a lot of pleasure from seeing people overcome their fears to conquer a difficult ski run. I love the buzz that everyone feels at the end of a long day skiing; everyone is usually exhausted but satisfied with what they’ve accomplished that day.

Why Booking a Ski Holiday is the Best Thing You Can Do This Winter

What happens if you get people of varying ski abilities on one holiday?

Groups will always form naturally. We all ski together on the first day to gauge everyone’s abilities, and then people tend to split into groups ranging from 2 people to 8. On the other hand, I did have a group of 14 skiers who refused to split up and wanted to ski together for the whole week!

I’m always honest with people about their ski ability, and if appropriate will suggest they have a lesson or change group. I always have in mind their safety, and making sure they’re not outside their ‘comfort zone’. Everyone should be enjoying and getting the most out of their holiday.

5 of the Best Ski Resorts in Europe for Beginners

So what’s been your favourite trip with Solos?

A lot of customers ask me this, and I’d have to say although it is a difficult choice, the Azores are definitely a contender. The islands are totally unspoilt and appear to be 30 or 40 years behind the rest of Europe. I also loved leading tours around Lisbon and Budapest, and Slovenia is always a great place for an activity holiday.

And what do you do when you’re not Tour Leading?

I do a lot of yoga, cycling, walking and skiing, and I also go to the gym. I’ve always been a very active person, and that’s not about to change anytime soon!
