Valentine's Day is upon us. According to the British Retail Consortium, a whooping £1.3 billion is spent on Valentine's cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts in the UK every year, with an estimated 25 million cards sent.

What are your feelings towards Valentine's Day? Is it a tacky marketing operation, another excuse to binge on chocolate or truly the most romantic day of the year?

Our cynical side can't help but sway towards the 'tacky marketing operation/eating an unacceptable amount of chocolate' argument, conjuring up images of men feeling forced to buy an over-expensive bouquet of flowers for their loved ones. This isn't what love should represent, surely?

If we really must celebrate it, we think North America has a better approach, where it's the norm for friends and family to send one another notes of adoration and appreciation.

It's important to remember that Valentine's isn't necessarily about celebrating couples! If you're single, why not send a Valentine to someone you secretly admire or join other singles at our popular Valentine's Balls across the UK?

We've still got space for eligible males at our Valentine's weekends in Manchester or Middlesex (ladies’ places at both Balls are already fully booked, so come on gents!).

Held on 13th February at the four-star Manchester Airport Marriott and Crowne Plaza London Heathrow hotels, both Valentine’s Balls are black tie and include a welcome drink, three-course dinner with wine, table moves, an evening disco and the services of an accompanying Solos Tour Leader. Tickets cost only £69 per person or stay overnight with breakfast from £119 per person.
