Social Media Manager for Solos Holidays, Stephanie Reed, explains what makes the Solos' community so special.

One of the most special things about Solos Holidays is undoubtedly its community of guests. I recently had the pleasure of spending time with guests as part of a three-night 'Into the Arctic circle' Norway tour of Tromso and Sommarøy.

It's always a little nerve-wracking just before you meet your tour companions, but upon saying my first “hello” to our super-star tour leader, Yvonne, and the rest of the group, I immediately felt very welcomed and found myself chatting at ease with the group.

What's lovely about Solos' group tours, is everyone is in the same position - i.e. solo travellers on their own. I joined a group tour to China with another operator years ago - its tours are open to solos, friends and couples - and it was a different experience. There were a lot of couples (who enjoyed indulging in continuous public displays of affection!) and I was the only solo traveller.

As I spent time with my new tour friends in Norway, I was pleased to learn that many of them had already enjoyed numerous holidays with Solos and had a lot of positive things to say about the community. Great friendships had been made on these trips and they had kept in touch over the years.

I recently shared a Facebook post asking guests to describe the Solos' community. Paul Wilkinson, aged 59, from Dorset said: "It's a fantastic group of people! On its golf holidays you play with two or three different people most days and the element of friendly team competition engenders a strong camaraderie.  Meeting up at breakfast and dinner and then of course in the bar, you get to know each other and learn about each other’s backgrounds which can vary enormously, but you’re all there because of your love of the game of golf!

And Laura Young, aged 34, from Bournemouth said: "I went on my first Solos' trip to Albania last October. There were 25 of us on our trip and I can honestly say there wasn't a single person there who I didn't like. I'd expected that I'd be the youngest on the trip and I was, but who cares? The age range was 30s to 70s  and we all got along brilliantly."

"I was also expecting that most people would be single and was surprised by how many people in the group did have partners but go on holiday on their own for a variety of reasons. It was a pleasure to spend a week with such an interesting mix of people all with one common aim. To experience a holiday somewhere a bit different."
