When you’re on holiday, there’s nothing better than unwinding on a sun lounger with a cocktail in one hand and a good book in the other. Like their cocktails, everyone’s taste in books is different and so the team at Solos have suggested some of their favourite reads that you might fancy dipping into!

EAT LOVE PRAY BY ELIZABETH GILBERT

Set in Rome, India & Bali - Eat Pray Love is about a woman taking time out to travel and ‘find herself’ - it’s a great read, both emotional and inspiring, with interesting insights into the places she visits.

THE PRINCESS MATILDA COMES HOME BY SHANE SPALL

The Princess Matilda Comes Home is the second book about a married couple that went to sea with an AA map book returning home from Scotland to London via the North Sea. Both books are written by Shane, wife of the well-known TV and film actor Timothy Spall. I picked this book because I really enjoyed the TV series and it is something that I would love to do if I had the money/time.

THE ISLAND BY VICTORIA HISLOP

The Island is a great book about the island of Spinalonga (off the coast of Crete) I bought this book in a charity shop for just £1 when looking for something to read – it’s such a great book that I couldn’t put it down, and I have recommended it to friends and family!

MCCARTHY’S BAR BY PETE MCCARTHY

When travelling around Ireland in a campervan I took along McCarthy’s Bar – it was so good that when I finished it, I started again at page one and enjoyed it all over again. I still have a copy!
Pete was born in England with Irish heritage. He had memories as a child of happy summer holidays in Cork. In later life, he decided to return and travel around Ireland by car, to see if the present day lived up to his memories.
As the book’s inside cover states: Firstly obeying the rule ‘never pass a pub with your name on it’, he encounters McCarthy’s bars up and down the land, and meets English hippies, German musicians, married priests and many others. A funny, affectionate look at one of the most popular countries in the world.

HANGOVER SQUARE BY PATRICK HAMILTON

Hangover Square is a tale of unrequited love and dipsomania during the Second World War. It’s a dark story with a compelling and perfectly constructed plot, written by an eloquent craftsman.

SYCAMORE ROW BY JOHN GRISHAM

The storyline of Sycamore Row was very fast moving yet at the same time detailed and enthralling - it gets you hooked from the first chapter! Set in the Deep South of America, the story revolved around a will made by a wealthy man with many estranged family members, whereby everything was left to his housekeeper. Of course the will was contested on many grounds with the usual fantastic court room drama. A real page turner I found you couldn’t put down!

PUCKOON BY SPIKE MILLIGAN

The only book I’ve read non-stop and one which had me in stitches on a busy Newcastle-bound train out of Rosyth on shore leave.
