Brexit - Travel Update

From the 01 January 2021, we are no longer part of the EU. As a result, there are a few minor changes when travelling to Europe. We have compiled a short summary of the changes you need to be aware of, to ensure you are prepared and please be rest assured these changes are not as radical as you may think.

You can read the official UK Brexit guidance on the government website.

Best wishes and happy travelling,

The Solos Team

Can You Use Your Current Passport?

You are not required to get a new passport if you wish to travel to Europe, providing your current passport is less than 10 years old and has at least six months left on it. It is worth noting that if your passport does not meet these requirements, you may not be able to travel and we would advise you to contact the passport office.

Will There Be Data Roaming Charges?

Charges for using your mobile phone in an EU country, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Switzerland or Norway are likely to have changed. We strongly advise you check with your individual mobile phone provider before you travel, as these charges may differ across different providers.

Do I Still Need Travel Insurance?

100% YES! Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is still valid for use within the EU and we suggest you keep an eye on your EHIC validity. You’ll find everything you need to know about EHIC’s and any other post-Brexit requirements on the government website. However, we advise that you always have full travel insurance in place before you embark on your holiday.

Is a Visa Required to Travel to the EU?

If you’re planning to stay in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland for more than 90 days in 2021, you will require a visa. From 2022, the EU will require you to complete an ETIAS form before travel, which stands for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. This is not a visa, but you will need to register your details before travelling via a quick and easy online form. Similar to when you travel to the USA!
