About this holiday

Sunny Bavaria, the most southerly region of Germany, provides perfect mountain walking scenery. It really is picture-postcard stuff; think crystal clear lakes, fairytale forests, flower filled meadows, chocolate-box villages, and of course, the majestic Alps. It has a similar feel to Austria, but what sets the region apart are its beautiful and elaborately decorated villages, where the buildings are bedecked with exquisite frescoes (Lüftlmalerei) depicting religious and pastoral scenes, local craftsmen at work, or even fairy tales.

Our home for the week is the beautiful mountain resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen which lies right on the border between Germany and Austria, at the foot of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. The walking will be spectacular, however, if you fancy a less strenuous journey, why not take the scenic cogwheel railway up to the top of Zugspitze, you can see more than 400 peaks stretching into four countries – Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Germany itself. Alternatively, the beautiful Austrian town of Innsbruck is only 60km away and is easily reachable by public transport.

Our programme of four walks includes:

Partnachklamm Gorge via Eckbauer

Heading out from Garmisch, we climb through a forest to the Eckbauer ski hut from where there are stunning views to enjoy. Next we hike along a narrow path to the amazing Partnachklamm Gorge which rises to over 2000 feet (entrance fee €2.00). Here we can admire the impressive rock formations, wild waterfalls and water rapids before we walk back down to Garmisch.

From Gipsbruch to the top and back

This walk takes us out of Garmisch and up into the glorious countryside that lies above it. We will enjoy magnificent views of the Garmisch valley as we climb. At the top, we will take a pitstop and maybe some lunch before we head back down the mountain on a beautiful slowly winding descent.

Hausberg

Starting from the village, we walk to Hausberg and then on and up to Kochelbergalm where there should be time for a coffee and a chance to admire the gorgeous views before we continue up to the top station at Hausbergbahn. On our way back down we will come to stunning Lake Riessersee, with its crystal clear waters before returning back to our base.
