Following our early arrival, we transfer to the hotel in Rio de Janeiro. After an early check in, the rest of the day is for us to relax after our long flight. In the evening we will gather for our Solos welcome drink and dinner.

Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil until 1960. Often called “Cidade Maravilhosa” (The Marvellous City) Rio de Janeiro is world renowned for its breath-taking landscapes and location, nestled between lush, green mountains and crystal-clear seas. Rio is one of the most culturally and economically prominent cities in Brazil and features some of the country’s most famous tourist attractions such as Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar), Christ the Redeemer statue (Corcovado), and the iconic beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. The city is full of energy and rhythm, and the locals of Rio, ‘Cariocas’, are known for their carefree spirit and charm.

Overnight Rio de Janeiro.

Our hotel is located in front of Copacabana beach and has a bar and the restaurant.

We will enjoy the most famous panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro, also known as the “Marvelous City”. From here we will drive to Santa Teresa, a traditional neighborhood located high upon the hills of the city, overlooking downtown and Guanabara Bay. Home to several Twentieth century mansions, cultural houses, galleries and gourmet restaurants, Santa Teresa’s charming cobbled streets are also a haven for local artists and intellectuals. In the afternoon we will return to the hotel and the rest of the evening is free.

We will take a glass cable-car to the first point at Urca Hill where we can enjoy spectacular views of the entire bay and its surrounding islands. Then we will take a second cable car to the top of Sugarloaf which rises 395 meters above sea level and offers a 360-degree view of the entire city including Botafogo and Copacabana Beaches, Corcovado Mountain and downtown of Rio de Janeiro. Later we will board a glass elevator, which takes us to a platform where we can enjoy more exquisite views. Useful Information

Visas

British nationals can normally enter Brazil without a visa as a tourist. For further information about visas see the website of the Brazilian Consulate in London.

Make sure you comply with Brazilian immigration laws on arrival in the country. You must satisfy the Federal Police (the Brazilian immigration authority) of your intended purpose of visit. You will need to be able to demonstrate that you have enough money for the duration of your stay and provide details of your accommodation and evidence of return or onward travel. Make sure your passport is stamped. If it is not, you may be fined on departure.

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Brazil.

Dual nationality

The Brazilian immigration authorities often require dual British/Brazilian nationals visiting Brazil to travel on Brazilian (rather than British) passports.

Yellow fever certificate requirements

Check whether you need a yellow fever certificate by visiting the National Travel Health Network and Centre’s TravelHealthPro website.

It is recommended to have the vaccination against yellow fever, for tourists that intend to visit the following Brazilian states: Acre, Amazonas, Amapa, Federal District, Goias, Maranhao, Mato Grosso do Sul, Para, Rondonia, Roraima and Tocantins. If you have recently visited a country, which is known to suffer from outbreaks of Yellow Fever, you will need to show that you have been vaccinated against the disease.

Transfer Time

The transfer from Rio de Janeiro Airport to the hotel in Rio de Janeiro is approximately 40 minutes depending on traffic and local conditions.

Included Programme

A sightseeing programme is included in your touring package.

Gratuities

There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. In order to give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below.

Your Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection to cover drivers, porters and hotel staff of £70.00. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % add on.

Please note that the service charge of 10% is included in the bills in most restaurants and bars. Therefore, additional tips are optional and are usually between 10% and 15% of the bill.

Currency

The currency in Brazil is the Brazilian Real (abbreviated to R$).

Locally in Brazil, and most of Latin America, it’s always much easier to exchange USD than it is to exchange GBP (not all places will take GBP). You can get Brazilian Reals here in the UK but please note that, not all areas in the UK will have Reals in stock. In Brazil you can withdraw money locally from an ATM. International credit cards are accepted in most hotels, shops and restaurants, however, always notify your bank before you travel to avoid your card being blocked when you try to use it in Brazil. Most of the times the banks always charge extra fees and not the best conversion exchange rate. The exchange rate fluctuates regularly.

Cuisine

Please note that Brazil has a very meat-based cuisine and if you have any food requirements or restrictions you should notify us.

The Brazilian cuisine is rich and varied with Portuguese and African influences. The most typical Brazilian dish is the "feijoada": served in big casseroles, it is a stew of black beans with beef and pork. Usually it is served with manioc flour, rice and slices of fresh orange. There is also the famous Brazilian barbecue, usually served in restaurant in a "rodizio" system, where several kinds of grilled meats are brought to the tables on a skewer and cut directly on the plates of the costumers. The food in the state of Bahia has stronger flavours. There is the famous "Vatapa": made with shrimps, fish oil, coconut milk, bread and oil. The national drink is the famous "Caipirinha": made with sugar cane alcohol called cachaca, mixed with lime, sugar and ice.

Dress Code

Light clothes and comfortable shoes are recommended. Passengers should take sunglasses, sun block with a high UV rating and swimming clothes. A jacket is recommended as many places have strong air conditioning. Smart, casual wear for the evenings would be acceptable.

We would recommend a lightweight raincoat and an umbrella or hat for protection against rain or sun and mosquito repellent.

Please note

  • A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required as we include plenty of sightseeing/travelling, sometimes with early starts. We would not recommend this holiday for those with walking difficulties.
  • The order of the itinerary and events may be subject to change
  • The baggage allowance for your internal flights is 23kg.
