Useful Information

Visa Waiver Programme (VWP)
Most passport holders can get an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) through the Visa Waiver Programme, which allows travel to the US for up to 90 days. The types of journey allowed under the VWP include tourism, certain types of business visit and transit to another country. You’ll generally qualify to enter the USA using the VWP if your British passport describes your nationality as a ‘British Citizen, is an ePassport with this internationally recognised symbol on the front cover and you:

  • Have received authorisation from the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA)
  • Haven’t been arrested for certain crimes, even if a criminal conviction didn’t result
  • Aren’t a dual national of Iran, Iraq, Sudan or Syria
  • Haven’t travelled to Libya, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen since March 2011
  • Can show that you have enough funds available on arrival to support yourself during your stay, even if you’re staying with family and friends.

ESTA application processing time

We need to let you know that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have advised that changes in ESTA application processing mean real-time approvals will no longer be available. International travellers using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) for travel to the United States should apply as soon as possible but not less than 72 hours before their international flight is scheduled to depart. It is the passenger's responsibility to make their application and ensure they have a valid travel authority before they travel. This will make the check-in process much easier for them. After this deadline, it cannot be guaranteed that the application will be processed before their flight departs. Real-time approvals of ESTA applications are no longer available.

Those nationalities not eligible to use the Visa Waiver Program will need to process a visa before travel. For more information please visit https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

Certain exemptions apply on a case-by-case basis to those who have travelled to Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen since March 2011. For more information see the website of the US Customs and Border Protection Agency or contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate.

If your current British passport is not an ePassport you can contact Her Majesty’s Passport office for a replacement to allow you to use the VWP. Otherwise, you’ll need to apply for a visa to enter the United States on your current passport.

Visa requirements
If you don’t qualify for entry under the VWP, and don’t have a US Permanent Resident Card, you should apply for a visa from the nearest US Embassy or Consulate before travelling. Further details on the US immigration rules is available on the Customs and Border Protection website.

Bringing medicines into the US
There are restrictions and prohibitions on the import of certain prescription drugs into the US. The US Department of Homeland Security website contains further information and advice on bringing medicines into the US.

Your specific passport and visa requirements, and other immigration requirements are your sole responsibility and you should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates of the countries in which you are planning to travel. More info

Transfer Time
The transfer time from Los Angeles Airport to your hotel in Los Angeles is approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the traffic.

Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. In order to give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. Tips to the drivers and guide is $3 to $4 per day and per person for each of them, standard amount in the U.S. and Canada. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. Tipping in the USA can be confusing and varies. But a general rule for waiters is to tip 15 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill, and $2 to $5 per night for housekeeping service. Tipping expectations are tied to minimum-wage levels. Waiters and other restaurant staff can earn three or four times more from tips than wages. As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions.

Included Programme
A sightseeing programme is included in your touring package.

Optional excursions

  • Whale watching cruise: $45 per person

  • Monterey Bay Aquarium: $50 per person

Dress Code
The dress code for during the day is casual. In the evenings the dress code is smart with gentlemen requested to wear a shirt, tie and trousers. Comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing are recommended.

Please note
A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required as we include plenty of sightseeing/travelling, some with early starts.
