After breakfast we will set off on a guided tour of Boston, the foremost city of New England, with its typical British charm and evocative colonial sites. During our tour we’ll discover the historic part of Boston and its oldest park, the Boston Common, before going on a walking tour along the Freedom Trail. This visit introduces us to sixteen of Boston’s historical sites (from the outside), most of which date back to the city’s colonial past and the revolutionary war era. The sites include Beacon Hill, the Massachusetts State House, and the King’s Chapel and burying ground, along with other places of interest. From here we’ll make our way to the charming town of Portsmouth, which is home to one of the oldest working ports in the United States. Today, the port sees five million tons of cargo on import/export ships from trading partners worldwide, on top of its pleasure boating and commercial fishing vessels. Afterwards, we will enjoy a brief panoramic tour of the town's historic centre before continuing to Portland, in the neighbouring state of Maine, and enjoying a classic New England dinner. Overnight Portland.

Useful Information

Visa
Most passport holders can get an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) through the Visa Waiver Programme, which allows travel to the US for up to 90 days. The types of journey allowed under the VWP include tourism, certain types of business visit and transit to another country.

You’ll generally qualify to enter the USA using the VWP if your British passport:

and you:

  • have received authorisation from the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA)
  • haven’t been arrested for certain crimes, even if a criminal conviction didn’t result
  • aren’t a dual national of Iran, Iraq, Sudan or Syria
  • haven’t travelled to Libya, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen since March 2011
  • can show that you have enough funds available on arrival to support yourself during your stay, even if you’re staying with family and friends.

Certain exemptions apply on a case-by-case basis to those who have travelled to Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen since March 2011. For more information see the website of the US Customs and Border Protection Agency or contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate.

You should complete an online pre-registration form on the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) website, before you travel. The US Customs and Border Patrol recommends that you do this at least 72 hours before departure. Applying for and securing an ESTA is a separate process to providing your airline with advance passenger information (details of your passport, country of residence, address of your first night’s accommodation in the US etc). For more information, and to apply online, visit the official ESTA website.

If your current British passport is not an ePassport you can contact Her Majesty’s Passport office for a replacement to allow you to use the VWP. Otherwise, you’ll need to apply for a visa to enter the United States on your current passport.

Visa requirements
If you don’t qualify for entry under the VWP, and don’t have a US Permanent Resident Card, you should apply for a visa from the nearest US Embassy or Consulate before travelling. Further details on the US immigration rules is available on the Customs and Border Protection website.

Bringing medicines into the US
There are restrictions and prohibitions on the import of certain prescription drugs into the US. The US Department of Homeland Security website contains further information and advice on bringing medicines into the US.

Transfer Time
The transfer time from Boston Airport to your hotel in Boston is approximately 30 minutes, depending on the traffic.

Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. In order to give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. Tips to the drivers and guide is $3 to $4 per day and per person for each of them, standard amount in the U.S. and Canada. The tipping of bar staff and housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (the rounding up of the drinks bill and a small amount left in your room on departure would be much appreciated. Tipping in the USA can be confusing and varies. But a general rule for waiters is to tip 15 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill, and $2 to $5 per night for housekeeping service. Tipping expectations are tied to minimum-wage levels. Waiters and other restaurant staff can earn three or four times more from tips than wages.

Included Programme
A sightseeing programme is included in your touring package.

Optional excursions

  • Lobstering excursion in Portland
  • Portland Museum of Art

Dress Code
The dress code for during the day is casual. In the evenings the dress code is smart with gentlemen requested to wear a shirt, tie and trousers. Comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing are recommended.
