Chamrousse

This delightful ski resort consists of two villages Chamrouse Recoin 1650 and Chamrousse Roche-Beranger 1750 in the Belledonne Massif region on the western edge of the French Alps. The Chamrousse ski area has an altitude of 2250m where at the Croix de Chamrousse you can experience the 360o stunning panoramic views across the surrounding mountain ranges. From here you can access all areas of the ski resort. The resorts westerly position provides an impressive snow record and is well known for the afternoon sun and stunning sunsets.

Skiing for All Abilities

Chamrousse has direct access to 77km of downhill skiing with 40 marked pistes, served by an efficient lift system where you will rarely see many queues. The ski area is split into three parts; Chamrousse Le Recoin 1650, Village du Bachat 1700 and Roche-Beranger 1750 all fully accessible where skiers can cross one area to the other making one fantastic varied ski area including a number of fun fir tree lined runs.

What to expect

Beginners are well catered for from the chairlifts at Chamrousse Roche-Beranger 1750 with a variety of wide pistes and nursery slopes to gain confidence plus an excellent English-speaking ski school. Intermediates can experience the green and blue runs found at 1700 & 1750 and progress to the more challenging red runs across at 1650. For the more advanced skier there are a number of areas left ungroomed for skiers looking for off-piste powder and the black runs can be found in the 1650 area. In addition to this there are long runs from the top of the resort at 2250m (Croix de Chamrousse) which will take you back down to the villages. In Chamrousse 1650 you will discover the famous down-hill run used in the 1968 Olympics. If you are looking to try out Snowboarding or perhaps some Nordic cross-country skiing, Chamrousse has the “Sunset Park” for the boarders and the “Nordik Park” for cross country skiing.

Apres Ski

In the afternoon, many skiers relax after a day of exhilarating skiing taking in the sun with a well-earned drink on the terraces at the lift station in Chamrousse 1700 & 1750 before heading back to the hotels. The resort atmosphere is very relaxed, based around a selection of bars, restaurants plus a cinema and ice-rink. If you are looking for something a little livelier, a few bars open to the early hours with music including the K-Dox Bar. The resort also offers a number of activities and facilities including shops, an outdoor swimming pool, snow mobiles, Yooners (a mix of toboggan and ski), sledging and snow tubing.

Useful Information

Transfer Time

The transfer from Grenoble Airport to the hotel is approximately 75 minutes, depending on weather and traffic.

Skiing Programme
You may either take group ski lessons, private ski lessons or form groups to enjoy exploring the slopes together. Whatever your preference, your Tour Leader will be available to help organise your skiing.

Ski Hire
Poor piste conditions can be hazardous to ski equipment as uncovered rocks and stones can easily scratch and damage skis and snowboards. We strongly recommend you inspect your ski hire equipment at the start of your holiday and agree the state of their condition with the ski hire suppliers, as clients are responsible for the care of their hired equipment and should this equipment be damaged the ski hire suppliers are within their rights to ask for a compensation payment.

Ski Equipment
This can be hired in the resort where you will be advised about the most suitable equipment for your standard of skiing. It is very important to have ski boots that are comfortable and fit well, so do not be afraid to keep going back and changing your boots until you get a good fit. For your safety, we advise that you wear a ski helmet wherever possible.

Dress Code
On a skiing holiday, dress is generally very informal, the emphasis being on comfort and warmth. We recommend that you pack a pair of skiing trousers and warm ski jacket or a waterproof shell and separate fleece lining or an all-in-one ski suit. Thermal or silk underwear is recommended. Cotton/cotton mix roll necks, T-shirts or sweatshirts; several thin layers are better than one thick layer. Ski socks, ski gloves or mitts and a hat or headband are suggested. Where temperatures are expected to be well below zero, take a facemask or balaclava. Moon boots or waterproof walking shoes are a “must”. Suntan cream (high protective factor), lip salve, sunglasses and/or goggles are all very useful items to pack. Casual clothes are ideal for the evenings; it is unusual on skiing holidays to dress formally in the evenings.

Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, and hotel staff of €15.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on. If you choose to have ski lessons, you may also like to thank your ski instructor at the end of the week with a token of appreciation.
