Panorama of Kristiansund, Norway

Discover southern Norway on this delightful autumn Nordic cruise. Located at the head of the Oslofjord, Oslo is encircled by wooded hills and peaks and features broad avenues, parks and elegant buildings. Kristiansand sits on Norway's southern tip; a small 17th century town with a marina, museums and shops. And, in Stavanger, echoes of its proud maritime heritage live on. Its whitewashed 18th century houses are probably northern Europe's best-preserved community of wooden houses.

The Oslofjord is an inlet in the south-east of Norway, stretching from an imaginary line between the Torbjørnskjær and Færder lighthouses and down to Langesund in the south to Oslo in the north. It is part of the Skagerrak strait, connecting the North Sea and the Kattegat sea area, which leads to the Baltic Sea.

Encircled by wooded hills and the peaks of Ekeberg, Holmenkollen and Grefsenkollen, Oslo lies at the head of the beautiful Oslofjord. With its medieval Akershus Fortress, modern City Hall and cutting-edge Opera House, Norway’s capital is an engaging mix of old and new. The Cathedral, Parliament House and National Theatre are all found in the city’s main thoroughfare, Karl Johans Gate, which runs through the centre up to the attractive Royal Palace. The marvellous Viking Ship Museum and Kon Tiki Museum tell of Norway’s rich seafaring history, or you can visit the remarkable Vigeland Sculpture Park.

Kristiansand is a city in southern Norway. Its old town, Posebyen, features traditional wooden houses. In the centre, neo-Gothic Kristiansand Cathedral is near the Sørlandets Museum, which displays Norwegian art from 1800 to today. The southeastern shoreline includes the Bystranda city beach, the 17th-century Christiansholm Fortress rotunda and Fiskebrygga quay, lined with fishmongers selling their catch.

Stavanger is today the ‘Oil Capital of Norway’. It is a vibrant, modern city with Gamle Stavanger at its core. The picturesque old part of Stavanger has gently sloping cobbled streets lined with small, white wooden houses built at the end of the18th and early 19th centuries. The city’s Anglo-Norman style cathedral was built in 1125, the same year Stavanger was officially founded. One of the most popular excursions from Norway’s fourth largest city is a visit to the Iron Age Farm at Ullanhaug giving a fascinating insight into life in the area some 1,500 years ago.

CMV Columbus

The impressive Columbus cruise ship joined the Cruise & Maritime fleet in June 2017. This splendid medium-sized cruise ship enjoys a sterling reputation on the British cruise market and will offer the same traditional cruising style that CMV is known for.

About Columbus

At 63,786grt, with a draft of 8.20 metres and overall length of nearly 250 metres, Columbus was purpose built for deep sea ocean cruising and CMV believe it's ideally suited to the type of exciting scenic cruise programme they operate. She underwent an extensive refit in August 2015 and was upgraded further in April 2017 before the start of her maiden CMV season.

At the Waterfront Restaurant you can opt for a full English breakfast, savour a leisurely lunch and enjoy a delightful five course dinner. Breakfasts and lunches are generally served on an open seating basis. However, two fixed time sittings are operated for dinner when your attentive waiting staff will welcome you each evening. Perhaps opt to dine at the Fusion or Grill speciality restaurants or sample the delights of a sumptuous dinner at the ‘Chef’s Table’. If you prefer something more casual, the Plantation Bistro is open every day for buffet style breakfast, lunches and dinner, and when the weather is fine, the Alfresco Grill beckons. NB: Supplementary charge applies for speciality restaurants and Chef's Table.

Columbus offers a choice of seven different lounges and bars including the Captain’s Club and Casino, Connexions, Raffles and Taverners Pub. There are also two speciality coffee and tea shops plus two deck bars. And, the spacious surroundings on board Columbus mean there is always a quiet corner to relax.

There are six entertainment venues including the impressive three-decked central Atrium, Dome Observatory & Nightclub and two-decked tiered Palladium Show Lounge where the talented Columbus show team and guest acts will perform for your enjoyment. The Palladium’s retractable stage provides a large floor for Ballroom dancing.

The maritime themed Columbus Observation Lounge affords fine ocean views and a place to truly relax with a good book. Trumps & Aces is a new dedicated bridge and card room seating up to 100 guests complimented with a separate Library. A new Crafter’s Studio will meet the growing demand for arts and crafts. Work off a few pounds in the fully equipped gym and book yourself in for a relaxing massage or beauty treatment in the well-appointed Jade Wellness Centre. And, for a spot of retail therapy, there is a fine selection of shops at the central Atrium.
