“For your Eyes Only” - Walk 1

After exploring the medieval mountain village of Xlomos, we walk through olive groves and along a ridge enjoying stunning views of the West coast until we reach the spectacular sandy beach used in the filming of James Bond’s For Your Eyes Only. After stopping for a taverna lunch by the sea, we continue through the dunes to beautiful Lake Korission, home to a vast array of birdlife.

Imperial Paths - Walk 2

We drive up to the foothills of Mount Agia Deka (‘Ten Saints') and head West along one of the most pretty parts of The Corfu Trail: a delightful path slowly up through gullies and ancient limestone rock formations, brings us to a hillside trail leading up (on some places rather steep) to the pretty monastery on top of the mountain. After a rest and enjoying the spectacular views around us (Corfu Town and the Achilleion Palace), we descend the other side to the village again and continue to the medieval hamlet of Kamara, where on the village square we enjoy our lunch (payable locally) in the old Kafeneion.  The last part of the walk brings us via paths to the picturesque village of Sinerades. The return drive will include a stop at the ‘The Kaiser’s Throne’ of the eccentric Emperor Wilhelm above Pelekas village (400m).  Enjoy spectacular views in all directions which includes Mount Pantokrator in the distance, the Ionian Sea with the Albanian Greek mainland coast, Corfu Town and Mount Agia Deka.

Forgotten Villages - Walk 3

Before starting our walk we visit the impressive monastery of Agios Athanasios, run by the hospital nuns who will offer us a fresh lemon drink and be proud to show us their precious murals and authentic work-shop. We start the walk through virgin countryside tracks, bordered by countless wild- flowers and asparagus. Then follow a meandering track with overhanging tress which lead us through a tropical-like rainforest. We then wade through a river stream, cross the Typhlopotamos bridge, and reach the quaint village of Valanio, located deep in the middle of nowhere! We continue along tracks covered by black nets, through a vast endless forest of olive trees, into a deep valley where a meandering trail with steps up to picturesque Sokraki, a medieval little village hidden behind the mountains on 450m altitude. We explore this picturesque village and in the local taverna, located on the ridge with fabulous views to Corfu Town in the distance, we enjoy our lunch (payable locally) but not before a swim in the incredible infinity pool! A short and spectacular return transfer along a ridge of the foothills of Mount Pantokrator, with magnificent views over our todays’ walking area and endless olive forest with beyond the Northern shore line, we return to our hotel.

The Packhorse Way - Walk 4

Today the real mountain terrain beckons… A spectacular transfer leads us to the very summit (917m) of the island: Mount Pantokrator and its Byzantine monastery of the same name. Experiencing incredible views all over 'the land of the gods’, where the guide explains exactly what is laid before us, before we start to prepare us for our long and slow downhill walk. We leave the one lane concrete road descending from the top, and soon enter the unique and immense Karst Plateau standing at 800m altitude. We enjoy the wild rocky moon-like scenery with wild flowers and fossils dating back to millions of years ago, all the while following the rough tracks, sometimes accompanied by goats, where the packhorses’ used to travel.

Reaching the tree border line again we hike into ancient oak forest leading through a gully to the fabulous viewpoint and ruins of the Tachiarchils Chapel, with its late byzantine murals and still a famous spot for pilgrims! We continue the footpath further down in the shade of ancient olive groves to the picturesque mountain village of Spartillas (450m), for a well-earned refreshment and lunch (payable locally), while enjoying the aerial views over the Ionian coastline below and the Greek mainland beyond.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit and well enough to take part in your chosen activity holiday. If you are unsure as to whether the walks are within your capabilities, please contact the office to discuss this matter, thus making sure you appreciate the terrain that you will be walking. You could be walking across uneven ground in some areas and extreme care must be taken, especially if wet. If used to using a pole/stick, it is advisable to bring it. Please appreciate the route and content of the holiday may change at the time and at the discretion of the guide/organiser, should conditions require. Solo’s Holidays Ltd cannot be held responsible for personal injury, accident or damage to property whilst on these walks other than incidents arising out of the company’s negligence. The guide has the right to refuse to guide a walk with anyone not properly attired.

What to Wear
It is of paramount importance that you have the correct footwear. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. However, if you are bringing new footwear, do make sure they are well broken in before you arrive. Experience has shown that wearing 2 pairs of woollen socks adds to comfort. The weather, even in summer, can be unpredictable. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:

  • Walking boots with good ankle support
  • Waterproofs – jacket and trousers
  • Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery
  • Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets
  • Shirts or t-shirts for walking in
  • Walking socks – several pairs
  • Lightweight fleece or jumper
  • Hat & gloves
  • Daysack/rucksack for walking
  • Umbrella – it can be used also for protection from the sun as well as rain
  • Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking
  • Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellant, etc
  • Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses – the sun’s strength is often multiplied in mountainous areas.

More to Explore
There will be plenty for you to see and do during your own leisure time during the course of your holiday, full details of which will be given out at your Information Meeting by your Tour Leader. Please note that prices shown may vary according to numbers. Full details will be given at your Information Meeting. All tours must be paid for in euros only. Your Tour Leader will help arrange these for you and explain where you will need to go but may not necessarily accompany you.

We suggest a Group Collection to cover transfer drivers, and hotel staff of €15.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate Ͽo add on.

Select Flight Inclusive or Excluding Flight if available. Excluding Flight bookings allow you free cancellation and amendments but do not include flights. Flights can be added later. See our Free Cancellation Guarantee. Normal terms and conditions apply. All holidays ATOL protected.
