Hampton Court Palace

On Saturday our coach transfer takes us over to Hampton Court Palace. Built in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, it was seized by King Henry VIII for himself and promptly expanded in 1529 when Wolsley fell out of favour. Europe’s finest craftsmen and landscapers were hired by Henry to improve and expand the Palace showing off his wealth and power with its rebuilt Great Hall and fabulous silk woven tapestries. Our guided tour not only provides an historical account but a range of fascinating stories. With a full day here, we can also discover the fantastic gardens, intricate maze the historic real tennis court and as of 2005, the largest grape vine in the world!

Windsor Castle

The next morning we head over to Windsor. The oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, its powerful history spans almost 1000 years. Here we have included entrance with a guided tour. View the magnificent State Apartments, furnished with some of the finest works of art and perhaps visit St George's Chapel with the tombs of 10 monarchs, including Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour. One of the main highlights in the castle is, of course, Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House. Taking 1,500 craftsmen 3 years to complete, the house has electric lighting, hot and cold running water, and even flushing lavatories.

Our evenings are relaxed affairs with pre-dinner drinks (cash basis) before dining in the hotel.

Location & Transport

Gratuities
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. In order to give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides and hotel staff (including restaurant, kitchen and reception staff) of approximately £10. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of bar staff and housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (the rounding up of the drinks bill and a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, restaurants expect a 10% gratuity (do check that service has not already been added to your bill). For taxis 10% the metered fare.

Dress Code
Dress will be casual for most of the break. However, gentlemen are requested to wear a shirt and tie for dinner. Comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing are recommended.
