As one of China's greatest economic and cultural centres, the city is often seen as the birthplace of China’s modernity. After breakfast we will go on a full day tour of Shanghai and visit Jade Buddha Temple. Till now, Jade Buddha Temple has a history of over 130 years. In 1882 of Qing Dynasty, the Buddhist monk Huigen from Mount Wutai, went on a pilgrimage visit to Mount Emei  and holy Tibet, got to India and finally reached Burma to take five pieces of Jade Buddha and prepare to send back to Mount Wutai, one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China. Later, it was destroyed in the war and rebuilt in 1918. Later we will proceed to the Bund, a waterfront central area of Shanghai, and have lunch at a local restaurant. Afterwards we will visit People Square, a large public square in the Huangpu District of Shanghai and enjoy a walk along Nanjing Road - the city’s main shopping street and one of the busiest in the whole world! Currency

Yuan

It is recommended that you take sterling or US Dollars as well as the local currency and a credit/debit card.

Cash can be exchanged readily at an official desk in all hotels with the rate fixed daily by the Government. Currency, surplus to requirements, may be reconverted at the airport prior to departure but you must make sure that you keep the initial money change receipt to then change money back. ATM machines are available in all cities. Major credit cards are accepted in hotels and some of the larger stores. It is now possible for you to obtain Chinese currency in the UK.

Transfer Time
The transfer time from Shanghai Airport to your hotel in Shanghai is approximately 50 minutes, depending on the traffic.

Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover guides, transfer drivers, and hotel staff of £100.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.

Included Programme
A sightseeing programme is included in your touring package.

Dress Code
The emphasis is on casual clothing for throughout. Comfortable shoes or walking boots are recommended. Dressing in layers and waterproofs to allow for changes in the weather is recommended. Please bring some warm clothing for example a fleece and warm outer jacket for the evenings and early mornings. Conservative dress is preferred for both men and women. No shorts in restaurants. Revealing clothing is considered in poor taste by both Chinese men and women.

Please note

  • A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required as we include plenty of sightseeing/travelling, some with early starts. We would not recommend this holiday for those with walking difficulties.
  • The order of the itinerary and events may be subject to change
