Here we can see various rock formations, holes and chambers, many of which resemble sophisticated sculptures. Covering an area of approximately 8 hectares, Uplistsikhe served as an important political, economic and religious centre in pre-Christian Kartli. In the evening we arrive in Akhaltsikhe – the major town of Samtskhe-Javakheti. Overnight Akhaltsikhe

Useful Information

Visas
British nationals don’t need a visa to enter Georgia for visits of up to one year.

Passport validity
Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required.

Travel insurance
We recommend you have a valid travel insurance policy as you may be asked to provide evidence of this by your airline at check-in or by the immigration authorities upon arrival in Georgia. You may face difficulties if you cannot provide evidence of valid travel insurance.

Travelling with medicines
Georgia has a very strict anti-drugs policy, which can also cover prescription and non-prescription drugs or medicines, otherwise commonly available in the UK and the European Union. For example, non-prescription medicines containing codeine are illegal in Georgia. This can cause serious problems for travellers and in some cases lead to administrative and criminal proceedings. Before travelling, check Georgia’s medication importation regulations on the Ministry of Health website

If you intend to travel with prescription medicine, you must carry a doctor’s prescription and ideally the original packaging. See Health

Currency
Georgian Lari (GEL)

You can take £ & € & $ and exchange at the airport or/and Tbilisi (better exchange rate). Cards are accepted in many places (with exception to American Express) but please make sure to have cash as many small shops in the regions only accept local currency.

Please note that in small villages there won’t be any ATMs, so please make sure to have cash with you.

Gratuities
We suggest a Group Collection to cover guides, transfer drivers, and hotel staff of minimum £50.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.

Included Programme
A sightseeing programme is included in your touring package.

Dress Code
During the day when sightseeing, we recommend casual, lightweight cotton clothing. You will find that smart casual wear is acceptable, even in the best hotels during the evening. We would recommend a lightweight raincoat and an umbrella or hat for protection against rain or sun. Please note that temperature in Gudauri in May can drop to 1°C hence warm layers are recommended.

Comfortable shoes are a “must” for sightseeing. From time to time, your guide will advise you about observing local customs. On some occasions, when entering places of worship for example, it will be necessary to wear clothing covering one’s shoulders and knees and women may be required to wear a scarf.

Please note

  • A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required as we include plenty of sightseeing/travelling, some with early starts. We would not recommend this holiday for those with walking difficulties.
  • The order of the itinerary and events may be subject to change
  • Toilets often very basic so hand sanitizer and tissues essential
  • It is recommended to take a travel plug
  • The tour includes bumpy roads and sometimes a bit of mud
