About this holiday

Do as much or as little as you like on the beautiful island of Malta. Staying in the picturesque seaside town of Qawra (pronounced awra) in St Paul’s Bay. This once sleepy fishing village has developed into one of Malta’s main tourist resorts. With a scenic promenade full of restaurants, bars and shops next to our hotel, and just a stone’s throw away from the rocky beach, we really are spoilt for choice on how to spend our days. Back at our hotel, which was fully refurbished in 2015, its seafront location means we are spoilt with the beautiful views of the Mediterranean. Our sea-view rooms means that we will have the chance to see the stunning sunrise every morning. Just a short stroll from the hotel gives us access to an indoor heated swimming pool – perfect for the cooler days.

Grand Knights

Valletta is 15km away and well-worth exploring. Purpose-built by the Knights after they sent the Turks packing following the Great Siege of 1565, its streets were planned on a grid pattern to let the sea breezes sweep through – air-conditioning Maltese style! Another suggestion is to travel inland to Mdina, the former capital. Discover the 'Silent City', so named because of the tranquillity of its narrow streets which entwine like a maze, springing lovely surprises around every corner, from Baroque palazzos to haunts once home to feudal lords of the Spanish Crown.

Our guided tour through the vibrant streets of Valletta will allow you to discover the beauty and charm of the fortified city built by the Knights in 1566. The Order of St. John ruled over the islands for 268 years and left a unique cultural legacy of which Valletta is the prime example. We first enjoy a breathtaking view of the Grand Harbour from the Upper Barracca Gardens. Then we visit St. John’s Co-Cathedral, including the Caravaggio masterpieces in the Oratory. The Co-Cathedral houses one of the most beautiful marble inlaid floors in the world. Going down Republic Street you will walk past the Grand Masters’ Palace and the recently restored St. George’s Square before watching the Malta Experience, an audiovisual show where Malta’s history throughout the centuries is brought back to life. Price: Approximately €37.00 per person

Mdina - Full Day Tour

Today’s excursion takes us to the central part of Malta, dominated by the medieval fortified city of Mdina, Malta’s former capital city. The narrow, winding streets, dating back to medieval times, lead to the imposing bastions, commanding a magnificent panorama of the island. On the way there, you will discover different styles of architecture, including Siculo-Norman palaces and other baroque buildings of great historical importance. Time stands still in this ‘Silent City’ which is a film-maker’s paradise. Leaving Mdina through Greeks’ Gate, we stop at the early Christian catacombs in Rabat before proceeding to the cliffs at Dingli. After lunch (included) we will visit the San Anton botanical gardens situated near the Presidential Palace, which you will be able to admire from outside. We shall also spend time at the crafts centre at Ta’ Qali. At the end of the tour, allow us to astound you with Mosta’smajestic dome, one of Europe’s largest. Price: Approximately €48.00 per person.

Three Cities Tour

Discover the Grand Harbour area opposite Valletta known as the Three Cities – Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea, where the Knights of St. John first settled in 1530. Driving past Cospicua we reach Vittoriosa for a walking tour through the narrow streets in the shade of historic buildings. At the Vittoriosa waterfront we take a typical harbour boat (the luzzu) for a tour of the colourful harbour creeks. From the Senglea Garden, situated at the tip of the peninsula, enjoy a stunning 360° view of the Grand Harbour, including the impressive Fort Sant Angelo from where Grand Master La Valette led the defence of the island during the Great Siege of 1565. Price: Approximately €29.00 per person

There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. In order to give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below. Your Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection to cover drivers, porters and hotel staff of €15.00. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate add on.

Dress Code

Medium weights for Winter. Casual “layers” for the autumn and spring months and a warm jacket is recommended for the cool mornings and evenings. Comfortable shoes are a “must” for sightseeing. The hotel prefers reasonably smart dress for dinner – gentlemen are asked to wear long trousers and a formal shirt.
