Join us on a cruise that takes you to the northernmost point of Europe and beyond, where you’ll see the Midnight Sun in the Arctic wilderness and try your luck at spotting the mighty polar bear.

Picturesque fishing village Skarsvag on Mageroya in Finnmark, Norway

Itinerary

View full itinerary

Our voyage begins, as so many great explorations have, in Tromsø. It’s a city with many great attractions but it is also easy to escape from the metropolis if you seek wilderness. In a traditional wharf house from the 1830s, you’ll find the Polar Museum where you can learn more about Tromsø’s polar history. The experience centre Polaria lies five minutes from the heart of the city. Here you’ll find an Arctic aquarium, interesting knowledge-based exhibits, a panoramic cinema and a gift and souvenir shop. The city’s most recognisable landmark is the Arctic Cathedral, built in 1965, featuring a huge original stained-glass mosaic. Take the Fjellheisen Cable Car to the top of the Fløyfjellet Mountain (420 m) and enjoy breathtaking views of the city, mountains and fjords.

A few hours before we arrive at Skarsvåg we will sail past the spectacular North Cape cliff, offering a stunning view of this famous landmark. Skarsvåg is a small village that lies along the northern coast of the island of Magerøya, and it claims the distinction of being the world's northernmost fishing village. The North Cape, the very northern tip of mainland Europe, has been a great adventure destination for travellers for centuries. Take in the view and stand atop the steep cliff that towers 307 metres above the Arctic Ocean, marking the end of the continent. Join the optional excursion to the North Cape and get a feeling what it’s like to stand at the end of the Earth. There is a combined museum and restaurant at the plateau, where you can learn more about early expeditions and watch a panoramic film that takes you through the four seasons in this landscape full of contrasts, light and breathtaking scenery.

Bjørnøya, with a population of just nine people, is the southernmost island of the Svalbard Archipelago. It is an isolated spot in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, known for hosting perhaps the largest concentration of sea birds in the Northern Hemisphere. This is where the cold waters from the Arctic Ocean meet warm Gulf Stream currents. When these water masses collide, nutrient-rich water is pushed up to the surface, making it an "all-you-can-eat" buffet for 126 different bird species. If conditions allow, we will land here.

Cruising northbound from Bjørnøya, the Captain and Expedition leader will make the best use of the conditions at hand. We may cruise into Hornsund and explore the ice-filled fjord by small boats, or land to hike to a viewpoint overlooking the glacier. The Expedition team will tell stories of the history of the area, including that of Wanny Woldstad, the first female trapper-hunter who lived here in the 1930s.

Often you can observe polar bears, although not every day and seldom at very close range. Like most things in a true wilderness, there are no absolute guarantees. But the more eyes scouting through binoculars, the better our chances of observing the King of the Arctic.

We might visit Kongsfjord, considered one of the most beautiful fjord areas in Spitsbergen, with mighty glaciers calving icebergs into the sea, framed by stunning mountain formations. On the shore of Kongfjord is the former mining settlement of Ny-Ålesund, now an international centre for research, with a picturesque mix of old and new buildings.

Every great explorer's voyage comes to an end. Many guests report a subtle exhilaration in the afterglow of this journey, partly from the thrill of coming just a few hundred miles from the North Pole.

On this final day, we will have a morning landing and sail into Isfjord, the most extensive fjord system on Svalbard, on our way to Longyearbyen. We arrive in Longyearbyen late in the evening and transport you to the airport for your night flight to Oslo.

On Board Currency

You can pay as you go on board the ships with cash or credit card on Coastal voyages. We accept Visa, American Express, Diners or MasterCard and regret that the system does not support Maestro Card.  Only credit cards are accepted on Explorer voyages however, MS Nordstjernen does not accept American Express. The credit card must be valid more than three months after your stay on board. Please note that when using your credit card on board the ship, your account will be debited in NOK. The rate of exchange will be the one validated by your credit card company.

For your convenience, a Cruise Card system is offered on board all ships. This system allows you to charge all on board purchases to your cruise card. Cruise card accounts can be created at all points of payment on board the ship. VISA, Master Card, Diners, American Express are accepted or cash (NOK, EUR, GBP, USD) as deposit. The itemised statement will be sent by email. Please contact the reception If you require a printed version. The cruise card account needs to be settled by 22:00 on your last night on board. For your convenience, your cruise card charges will be billed automatically to your credit card. The credit card must be valid for at least another three months. Any discrepancies must be reported before disembarkation. This also applies if you want to pay part cash and part credit card. The currency used on board is Norwegian Kroner. Exchange rates are similar to those in a hotel. Please check with the reception for methods of payment. Please note that a PIN code is required when paying with your personal credit card on board.

Excursions

Most excursions are pre-bookable and can be added on to your voyage during the online booking process. The excursions offered on your Coastal or Explorer voyage are listed on the relevant voyage page on the Hurtigruten website under the 'Things to see and do' tab.

If you are booking over the phone, excursions can be added at any point from the time of booking the voyage until four weeks prior to departure for Coastal voyages (two weeks if you pay by credit card). Please note that Explorer excursions have limited capacity and can only be booked four weeks before departure (two weeks if paid by credit card).

All excursions are subject to availability and sold on a first come, first served basis. We recommend pre-booking online or over the phone, where possible.

Excursions which are not pre-bookable may be booked from the tour leader on the ship. Excursions booked on board will be payable in Norwegian Kroner and the price may vary as a result of exchange rate fluctuations.

Please bring your driving license if you have pre-booked or are planning to go on any of the snowmobile or ATV excursions. Excursions and their contents are subject to maximum/minimum numbers, sailing times and weather and/or local conditions. If pre-booked excursions have to be cancelled, you will receive a refund on board in NOK.

Is WiFi Available on board

Yes, WiFi is available on all ships at a fee. Please note depending on the vessel’s location, internet connectivity and telephone usage may be out of range or limited due to the remote locations which are sailed too.

Can you go on shore in every port?
Yes, with some recommendations. If the ship is in port for 30 minutes or longer, you are encouraged to take a look around all of the ports. However, in some ports the ships only stop for 15 minutes. In this case, we ask that guests continuing their voyage to stay on board, just to avoid any risks.

What clothes should I pack for travel to Norway?
The best approach is to bring multiple layers of comfortable, durable, and warm wear which can be piled on or stripped off depending on the weather. During summer, guests are encouraged to make the most of the sunshine to participate in hikes and city walks. Reliable walking shoes and a light jacket are therefore good items to include if travelling in the Midnight Sun season.

Winter is a spectacular time with the Northern Lights often appearing in the arctic skies above. Guests should be fully kitted out for cold weather with a water and wind-resistant/proof winter coat, thermal clothing, sturdy boots with a good sole, a scarf, gloves and a hat.

As in many other countries, autumn and spring in Norway are a mish-mash of rain and sun. The sensible among you will bring a few different types of clothing in expectation of diverse weather that can be hot and then cold, dry and then wet. The Hurtigruten experience is about exploration and relaxation. There is therefore no dress code or formal attire on board. Keep the tuxedo and evening gown at home and just enjoy the voyage!
