About the trip

Our American Sounds of The Deep South will take us on a journey through a land steeped in rich cultural heritage and with a powerful Civil Rights History. It’s a place to challenge and delight all of your sense whether its tasting the world famous Cajun and Creole cuisine, experiencing the equally world renowned southern hospitality or taking in the sounds of the birthplaces of jazz, blues, country and rock ‘n’ roll. We travel from the moss covered bayous of Louisiana, to the cotton fields of Mississippi and on to the rich rolling farmlands of Tennessee and visit 3 of the most fascinating and engaging cities in America: New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville.

What you'll be doing

DAY 1

Arrival in New Orleans

Welcome to New Orleans! We start with a three day stay at the mouth of the mighty Mississippi delta in New Orleans, a city with a feel and charm like no other, with its unique fusion of French, Spanish, American and African influences that promises to delight and enrich every visitor. They have a motto in ‘The Big Easy’ that says “Laissez les bons temps rouler” – let the good times roll and it is a place that offers no end of good times and life long memories. Known over the world for jazz music, Cajun cuisine, and outrageous Mardi Gras celebrations, the city is a melting pot of cultures with a diversity that is reflected in everything from the music and food to the language and architecture. Upon arrival at New Orleans Airport, we’ll proceed through immigration, collect our luggage and meet our local guide. We then transfer to our hotel. In the evening we will enjoy a welcome drink and dinner.

DAY 2

New Orleans

Our day begins with a 2 hour guided tour of New Orleans. More than just a tour, you will enjoy a walk through the French Quarter to discover Canal and Bourbon Streets, Saint Louis Cathedral and the , a remarkable 18th-century Spanish building. Stop at the French Market and Café du Monde where you will can indulge on a local specialty: the beignet. Next, we depart on a scenic Mississippi River cruise aboard an authentic steamwheeler. After the cruise, visit the Garden District to see the well-preserved collection of historic southern mansions. Visit of the Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 distinguished by its intersecting avenues designed to accommodate funeral processions, it was the City’s first planned cemetery. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places by virtue of its significant history, location, and architectural importance, it retains its original size and configuration, and contains a variety of tomb types and styles. Return to the French Quarter. Overnight.

DAY 3

New Orleans

Today we can take the day at our own pace. After breakfast we can relax at the hotel or explore this unique city further. There many quaint areas worth exploring, from the trendy Warehouse District to the posh Garden District. Our top tip: Hop on and off the local streetcar this wonderfully preserved public transit service is a real bonus for visitors. Not only are the streetcars fun to ride, they actually go where you want to visit. One of the most popular routes is the historic St. Charles Line. Streetcars first rolled along here in 1835. It’s one of the best ways to get to and from the Garden District.

DAY 4

New Orleans – Natchez

This morning leave for Thibodaux – a landscape of prairies and fields of sugar cane. From there, you will embark on a boat tour in the nearby bayou. Get your cameras ready as you you may meet some of the local residents: alligators! Continue the day with a visit of Oak Alley Plantation, a superb home whose alleys are shaded by rows of magnificent live oaks. We then drive to Natchez were we will stay overnight.

DAY 5

Memphis

After breakfast we follow the river north to the vibrant city of Memphis, home to the iconic Sun Studios that launched the stratospheric rise to global fame and stardom of Elvis Presley. It is also where ‘the King’ made his home, Graceland, which since his passing has attained and retained a shrine like status for music lovers from around the world. The city also played a tragic role in the civil rights movement as the place where Martin Luther King was assassinated and we’ll get the chance to visit The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel which recounts this dark chapter in the countries struggle for freedom and equality. We will have a rest stop in Jackson, the capitol of Mississippi on the way. Arrival in Memphis in the late afternoon. Enjoy a brief orientation tour of Memphis. Spend the evening at one of the local clubs on Beale Street.

DAY 6

Memphis

We start the day with a visit of Graceland. Our tour of Graceland Mansion includes the living room, his parents’ bedroom, the kitchen, TV room, pool room, the famous Jungle Room, his father’s office, the newly-enhanced Trophy Building, the Racquetball Building – newly-restored to how it looked in 1977, and Meditation Garden. The visit will also include Elvis’ private airplane. This afternoon, we visit of the National Civil Rights Museum. Exhibits trace the history of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the 17th century to the present. The museum is built around the former Lorraine Motel, where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Overnight in Memphis.

DAY 7

Memphis

Today is a day at leisure to explore Memphis at your own pace A tour of the legendary Sun Studios, where artists such as Johnnie Cash and Elvis Presley recorded their music is recommended.

DAY 8

Memphis – Nashville

In the morning we depart to Nashville known simply as Music City USA. The global epicentre of the country music scene continues to be a place where aspiring artists come to start their careers, songwriters try out new songs and where there are a seemingly endless number of venues you can visit to hear some of the best live music of offer in the States. Whilst there we’ll spend an evening at the Grand Ole Opry, where legends and contemporaries of country, bluegrass, folk and gospel have performed since 1925. You will be taken on an orientation tour on arrival which will include stops on Broadway – center of the city’s thriving live music scene, downtown with the Music Walk of Fame, and Centennial Park with it’s full-sized replica of the Greek Parthenon.

DAY 9

Nashville

Today you will discover why Nashville is affectionately referred to as “Music City.” Start with a visit of the Country Music Hall of Fame. In the museum’s core exhibition, “Sing Me Back Home: A Journey Through Country Music”, visitors are immersed in the history and sounds of country music, its origins and traditions, and the stories and voices of many of its honored architects.  The story is revealed through artifacts, photographs, and text panels, with a rich overlay of recorded sound, vintage video, and interactive touchscreens. Next, visit the historic RCA Studio B – once the recording home of popular music titans such as Elvis Presley, Chet Atkins, Eddy Arnold, and the Everly Brothers. We spend afternoon at leisure. This evening, you will be taken to a live concert at the “Grand Ole Opry”*, the world famous home of Country music. Overnight. *Depending on schedule this may be on day 10

DAY 10

Nashville

Today we have full day at leisure to explore the city further. In the evening we gather for a farewell dinner together.
