Enjoy a two-night stay in the breathtaking Brecon Beacons with a group of fellow solo travellers. Experience the magic of Wales’ first Dark Sky Reserve, where you’ll have the chance to stargaze under some of the clearest and darkest skies in the UK. Embrace the tranquillity of nature and the stunning night sky for an unforgettable getaway.
Check-in at The Bear Hotel today at your leisure. Meet the rest of the group for dinner this evening and spend the night getting to know each other.
After breakfast, today is at your leisure to relax at the hotel or spend the day exploring Brecon Beacon National Park. This evening, be transferred to the Brecon Beacon Visitor Centre for a night of stargazing. We will experience the night sky from Wales’ first International Dark Sky Reserve, guided by knowledgeable Dark Sky Wales astronomers. As part of a wider group, we will use various advanced portable telescopes situated on the grounds to observe the night sky and capture images of celestial objects.
NB – in case of inclement weather, engaging astronomical talks will be offered in a cosy room near the observatory.
After a final breakfast with the group, say your goodbyes and depart at your leisure.
Dating back to 1432, the Bear Hotel is a family-run place known for its traditional charm and hospitality. Set in the picturesque village of Crickhowell, it’s a great base for exploring the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Facilities include free parking, a bar & restaurant and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout. Staff speak both Welsh & English and pets are welcome for a fee.
Rooms include tea and coffee making facilities, heating and newspapers (available on request).
The Bear Hotel is located at Crickhowell, Powys, NP8 1BW.
If arriving by car, the A40 trunk road runs through Crickhowell and the A465 dual carriageway is just 3 miles away – linking on to the A449 and M4, M5 and M50 motorways.
The hotel offers free public parking.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer to arrive by train, our closest station is Abergavenny, which has direct links to major rail hubs at Birmingham, Newport (Gwent) and Manchester. From here, a taxi will take about 15 minutes.
We advise you to wrap up warm for your Brecon Beacons adventure, especially at night! If you are thinking of exploring the national park in the day, hiking boots/shoes are advised along with warm layers and a rain coat
There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. To give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below.
The Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection at the beginning of your holiday to cover drivers, guides, porters and hotel staff of approximately £15. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip.
The stargazing is weather permitting, and requires a clear enough sky to operate. If weather does not allow for stargazing, please note an astronomical talk will take place in a warm weather facility instead.
Please note, this activity will include other non-Solos holidaymakers
