“Abbey to Abbey” Abingdon to Dorchester

After breakfast we make a short coach journey to the quaint historic market town of Abingdon. Nestled by the River Thames, the town dates back to the Saxon era and holds claim to be the oldest continuously inhabited town in England. We start our walk next to the former County Hall and pass the impressive gateway to its former abbey, once one of the richest in the country.  We cross the river Thames and start to follow its path, soon discovering the junction with the former Wilts and Berks Canal and the grade 2 listed Old Culham Bridge. We follow the old course of the river into Sutton Courtenay, a former royal manor where in the churchyard we will discover the burial sites of a former Prime Minister and a well-known author. We rejoin the Thames Path and follow the trail past a lock to Clifton Hampden Bridge. Here we have a late lunch in the adjacent pub interestingly mentioned in Jerome K Jerome’s novel “Three Men in a Boat”.

Goring – Thames Path & the Chiltern Way

Today we take our coach for the start of today’s walk to the delightful riverside town of Goring On Thames, the former home to George Michael.  Our route initially follows the Chiltern Way ascending away from the town with fantastic views across to the Goring Gap, where the River Thames forced its way through the hills 10,000 years ago during the last ice age. Our route alternates between glorious farmland and beech woodland of which the Chiltern beechwoods are famous for their former role in furniture-making. Today their broad canopies provide dappled shade if sunny and a vast umbrella if wet.  We will almost certainly hear, if not see, a variety of wildlife including those magnificent birds of prey, the red kites, which were re-introduced to the area nearby. Our route drops down to the village of Whitchurch with its wooden-framed church tower and a toll-bridge crossing the Thames.  We will stop here for lunch in one of two pubs in the village.
