Hotel Kalevala 1986[1]

Wild Finland

Join us as we venture off the beaten track and stay in a private, family run hotel in a remote corner of Eastern Finland and it is the perfect way to enjoy a holiday away from crowds and traffic. The area is famed for its wildlife, some of which is now either extinct or incredibly rare elsewhere in Europe, the Wild Taiga region of Finland is a wonderful destination for summer activities. Its geography is dominated by hills, forests, lakes and rivers, which are home to moose, reindeer, and large carnivores including the brown bear, wolverine, grey wolf and lynx. Enjoy the beauty and tranquillity as we paddle, hike with huskies or cycle through this beautiful and untamed landscape.

Bear watching

Get up close and personal with the wild brown bear in its natural environment from the safety of our specially designed bear hides. This truly is an unforgettable experience to see these magnificent animals in their natural habitat for nature lovers or budding photographers! After having dinner in our hotel we will transfer deep into to the wilderness close to the Russian border where we will meet our guide and spend the night. Sleeping bags, blankets, pillows are included. Please note that smoking is not allowed during the night and silence should be observed throughout the night.

Cycle tour and night saunas

After dinner we will head out on two wheels as we can enjoy a 2 hour guided bike tour and explore some of the trails and paths of this beautiful region. Later, we can enjoy a night sauna, and enjoy the white nights just like the Finns with the sauna area reserved exclusively for Solos guests from 22:30-00:00!

Husky trekking

Immerse yourself in the incredible scenery and join us on a hike with a difference! Although technically on their summer holiday, our huskies will be very eager to guide us through beautiful scenery and uncrowded trails.

Sunset paddling

This relaxing, guided trip starts on Lake Lammasjärvi which is next to our hotel, we can enjoy the beautiful sunset from our canoes. During our trip we will also have the chance to enjoy a coffee break and light refreshments on an island.

If that’s not enough....

There are further optional activities for the motivated! We can try our hand at fishing and Nordic walking or rent bicycles from our hotel. Alternatively we can don our dry suits and enjoy an exhilarating swim down the Pajakkakoski rapids!

Relaxation options extend beyond the usual with infra-red saunas, peat saunas and traditional Finnish Bonesetting on offer. Or enjoy a lake-side sauna – immersion in hot water followed by a leap into the lake; not for the fainthearted!
