About this holiday
Our base, the beautiful Norweigan city of Tromsø lies deep within the Arctic Circle and has a stunning setting, nestled between magnificent blue fjords and snow covered mountains. It also is known to be one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in mainland Europe. This incredible natural phenomenon, an explosion of iridescent greens, pinks, yellows and blues which soar across the night sky in an magical display, is, once witnessed, never forgotten!
We spend 3 nights here, and our city walk will give us an insight into life in this remote northerly region, and give us a chance to get a true sense of the vast Arctic landscape and beauty of this city, known as the “Paris of the North”.
The next day there will be the opportunity to try out some dogsledding in beautiful surroundings of the arctic valley landscape. After a short explanation of how to be a “musher” (driver) and handle the dogs and sleds you will set off on your adventure. The huskies love running on the hilly tracks and wilderness but you need to part of the team and help them up any hills. It’s a fun experience but also a physical workout!
Please note that this excursion is weather dependent, the alternative excursion will be a reindeer feeding experience, where we visit a Sami camp and feed their heard of approx. 200 reindeer who will swarm around and some will even eat from our hands. After this we will be invited into a Sami gamme (a traditional Sami hut) where they will be served warm drinks and a traditional Sami meal will be cooked over the fire. After lunch we can go to a lavvo (Sami heardsmen tent) and gather around the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for us.
