About this holiday

We are based in the charming resort of Cabanas, close to Tavira, the “Pearl of the Algarve” a lovely town with winding streets, picturesque houses, gabled roofs, quaint churches, and a Moorish castle sitting high above it and dominating the landscape.

Our walking will allow us to explore the region’s scenic coastline, as well as its beautiful interior. In the evenings, our dinners will be taken in traditional Portuguese restaurants in both Cabanas and Tavira – a sociable and relaxed end to the day!

Our programme of 5 guided walks includes:

Cacela Velha

This walk crosses the scenic Ria Formosa Natural Park, a protected nature reserve covering over  50km of coastline from Tavira to Ancao. There’s plenty to spot; birds abound here, including storks and, if you are lucky, flamingos, as well as the occasional local fisherman going about his business.

Today we walk through open countryside, enjoying fine views across the surrounding hillsides. We will pass fields of carob and olive trees, as well as groves of oranges, lemons, figs, pomegranates and almonds – a real sense overload when you combine this with the abundance of wildflowers. Our walk will end in a local bar, where we will have time for a refreshing drink.

Tavira Island

The day starts with a boat trip from the centre of Tavira to the Ilha de Tavira (recognized as one of the 10 best beaches in the world). Here we head for the sea and then walk along the island to Barril Beach, with its huge display of anchors on the dunes. We then cross the lagoon and walk to the delightful fishing village of Santa Luzia.

Santa Catarina

This walk will take us through forests of cork oaks, giving a chance to understand the commercial and environmental importance of this product to the region. We will visit local villages where working life continues as it has for centuries, and we can admire the traditional handmade bricks and colourful tiles that the region is so famous for.
