Based in arguably one of the most beautiful areas of the Basque country; Oñati is nestled at the foot of the Aloña Mountain and here we can we discover the delights of rural, Northern Spain. Our hotel is located just a short walk away from the Sanctuary of Arantzazu, an imposing shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary where its builders focused on achieving an artistic and modern building. Our walk today is in the Aizkorri mountain region which has recently been made a national park and is one of the most popular walking areas in the Basque region. It is made up of mighty limestone peaks and at its summit stands a crucifix. The descent will be made through olive groves and beautiful beech forests.
Today our walk takes us to the Sierra de Aloña. A beautiful mountain where our path takes us through lush green meadows with panoramic views towards the nearby beautiful limestone peaks of Udalaitx and Anboto.
Artaso – Gaboño
Starting at the Sanctuary of Arantzazu we walk towards the Urkilla mountain range, passing through the villages of Gallerdi, Artaso and San Juan de Artia on our descent.
Peru Aitz – Zabalaitz
Our walking today takes us on an ascent to Peru Aitz before a short climb to reach the peak of Zabalaitz at 1,252m. Then we descend to Biozkorna where there is a well and the “Ama Birgiñaren Silloia” a stone which is a similar shape of an armchair, where legend has it the Virgin of Arantzazu rests when she moves from the mountain of Aralar to Arantzazu.
Hotel Santuario de Arantzazu
Located in the tranquil location of Arantzazu our hotel has wonderful mountain views. It is a traditional stone building with elegant and modern interiors.
