About this holiday
There is some stunning scenery
to enjoy on this new walking
holiday on the Costa de la Luz.
We are based in the charming,
authentically Spanish resort of
Zahara delos Atunes – our hotel
lies in the heart of the town so
close to its glorious beach and
bars and restaurants.
The walking is a wonderful mix of
coastal and inland scenery:
A beautiful walk along the
highest cliffs of the Andalusian
coast! Starting from Barbate,
we climb gently from the beach
through inland pine woodland and
mediterranean shrubland. The
views are amazing and we might
even see the coast of Africa in
the distance. We continue to the
village of Caños de Meca perfect
for a pitstop on its lovely beach and
maybe dip your toes in the sea.
The walk continues along the beach
as far as the headland at Cape
Trafalgar and its iconic lighthouse.
We start from Valdevaqueiros and its huge dune and walk through the countryside climbing towards San Bartolome mountains. On the way, we walked passed one of the major Necropolis known in the South west of the Iberic Peninsula used by prehistoric humans and later on by Romans for their funerals. We get to the tiny village of Betijuelo hiking amongst cattles and start going down back to the beach across the pine forest. The beach we get to is lined with stunning rocky cliffs and we walk along this cliffs as far as Bolonia. On our way, we can enjoy stunning mountain and coastal views, as well as many migratory birds, especially eagles and vultures, which glide effortlessly on the thermals overhead. Bolonia is an idyllic place to relax at the end of our hike, and if you wish, you can take the time to visit the best conserved Iberian Roman Ruins, a roman village where you can still observe all the social organisation of Romans life.
Alcornocales Natural Park
The longest, but most beautiful
walk of the week ; we start with
a walk through a cork tree forest
(Alcornocales) continuing through
a canyon (canuto) where the
humidity and the microclimate
allow for a spectacular array of
tropical vegetation. As we continue,
on clear days, we can see the rock
of Gibraltar, coast of Africa, the
cliffs of Barbate and the bay of
Coastal Trail to Tarifa
A pleasant walk along the coast
to Tarifa ; we hike along pebbled
beaches, passing the imposing
watch tower of Guadalmesi, with
the 2 pillars of Hercules, the
official waterline between the
Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic
Ocean clearly visible. The walk ends
in the charming resort of Tarifa
with its beautiful old town and
