About this holiday

Stretching from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Portuguese border, the Costa de la Luz is one of Spain’s most spectacular stretches of coastline, named after the beautiful sunshine and wonderful light it experiences.

We will be walking through some wonderfully diverse landscapes; along magnificent beaches, coastal forests, wetlands, steppes, mines and hills – all this is possible in one of the most biodiverse regions of Europe, renowned for its birdlife and wildlife. Flamingos inhabit the wetlands and huge vultures and eagles soar effortlessly above in the sky. It’s the only region in Southern Europe still inhabited by the lynx, and the region’s pig, the Iberian Black, produces some of the finest ham you could ever wish to try – its all to do with the acorns they are fed on!

Our programme of 4 walks includes:

Donana & El Rocio

Starting on the coast, we will walk along wild cliffs, before we arrive at the Asperillo Natural Monument, an amazing system of fossil dunes that stretches for miles along the coast. Next we head inland to El Rocio, a mystical village which lies on the edge of the wetlands. It’s got a real feel of the wildwest about it with its sandy streets which are easier to navigate by horse than by car.

El Rompido

This pleasant, gentle walk will take us along the coast – first past the wetlands and then through coastal woodlands, both of which are home to a huge variety of wildlife. After a stop for lunch, we will then take the ferry over to La Fleche de El Rompido – a wonderful stretch of beach where we can relax, or admire the wonderful sand dunes, and maybe even spot a resident chameleon!

Banks of the Guadiana

This walk takes us along the banks of the River Guadiana which forms the border between Spain and Portugal. We will hike through the hills to Alcoutim, a picturesque Portuguese village where we will take a pit stop, with time to relax on the banks of the river looking over to Spain, or there will be the chance to take a short boat trip down the Guadiana itself.
