About this holiday

With our hotel based just a short walk from the town of Barnstaple, where better than to kick off our weekend with a welcome drink and dinner at the hotel.

After breakfast on Saturday morning, we board our coach and head to the ferry port for our trip over to Lundy Island. Lying less than a 2 hour ferry journey off the cost, Lundy is where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Bristol Channel and with nothing in between it and America, this granite outcrop is surprisingly still peaceful and unspoilt. At 3 miles long and only half a mile wide, the island still offers a range of things to do. Our guided tour introduces us to the history of life here through its monuments and listed buildings. Due to its isolation, the island has a stunning backdrop and natural beauty which is a paradise for unique wildlife and the outdoors. With its wide spaces and big skies, Lundy is great place just to walk around.

On Sunday we stay a bit closer to ‘home’ and head into Barnstaple for a guided tour. Located on the River Taw, this ancient town was granted charter in 930AD by King Aethelstan. Lying to the north of Dartmoor and west of mystical Exmoor, this now flourishing market town features attractive narrow streets and alleys. See the traditional Pannier Market as well as the Norman mound and remnants of the original castle. The rest of the afternoon is ours to explore the town, perhaps do a spot of shopping or even head to one of the best beaches around, Saunton or Woolacombe.

Dinner on our last evening is not included to enable us to have dinner in one of the local restaurants in town.

On Monday after check out, you may like to explore the local area at your leisure. Much-loved by many, the book Tarka the Otter was the inspiration from many of the footpaths and cycle paths around here or why not take in the Exmoor Steam Railway which runs from Bratton Fleming nearby.
