About this holiday

The weekend is a busy one but sure to be great fun. Meeting up on Friday evening for a welcome drink and dinner in the hotel before heading out on Saturday morning into the city of Durham and its beautiful cathedral. Said to be one of the great buildings of Europe with the city below, it is instantly recognisable. This grand cathedral was built in 1093 to house the shrine of St Cuthbert and is known for its Romanesque architecture. Look out for the 12th century Galilee Chapel with is medieval wall painting as well as the medieval Cloister, which featured in 2 Harry Potter films.

An early dinner is taken at the hotel before we board the coach for Bishop Auckland and ‘Kynren – an epic tale of England’. The show takes place on a 7.5 acre landscaped stage against the backdrop of enchanting Auckland Castle once darkness has fallen. Presented by Eleven Arches, this spellbinding story is told through the eyes of a 10-year-old-boy, living in the North East who dreams of becoming a footballer. Upon meeting Bishop Henson of Durham, a wizard/professor type fellow, he is then taken on a magical journey through time and key moments of history.

Witness Viking and Norman invasions, medieval feasts,the Elizabethan era, Georgian Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution and World War II. Taking place over 90 minutes, be mesmerised by over 1000 volunteers as well as an accompanying cast of animals comprising of horses, sheep, goats, cattle and ducks. All of these combined with awesome pyrotechnics, spectacular lighting and effects, thrilling music put on a spellbinding show showcasing over 2000 years of history!
