About this holiday

Our full day walk begins in Wiltshire in the picturesque Woodford Valley with the River Avon flowing through and hills and pastures on either side. Beginning with a steep ascent up onto Salisbury Plain, our route then levels off and we can enjoy long views of outstretched countryside. Continuing towards Druids Lodge the path becomes a farm track where we turn northwards and onto an ancient track gradually descending and passing a renowned group of Neolithic burial mounds at Normanton Down. Then right ahead of us, in the near distance stands the majestic stone circle of Stonehenge. We do not visit the site but our vantage point provides a view of their imposing presence. Taking a track used over the centuries by Roman soldiers, druids and pilgrims, we wind our way back to the Avon’s valley where another path takes us past pretty woodland to an impressive mill house and across to Great Durnford for lunch (at own cost). Our afternoon takes us past thatched cottages, through woodland and hillside meadows as we finish in the town of Amesbury.

The next day we head over to the village of Kingsclere. A quiet county lane takes us out of the village passing St Mary’s Church and then onto farm track crossing the broad valley floor. Following disused gallops we head towards the foot of Watership Down (of the famous book) where we head steeply uphill onto the Down itself and its commanding views. Our trail continues through beautiful woodland and through the splendid country estate of Sydmonton before passing Watership Down farm and on to our final destination, the Royal Oak pub in the village of Ecchinswell for lunch (own cost).
