About this holiday

Passing through some of the most exquisite parts of England, the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail covers 84 miles of rugged moorland and rolling fields between the vibrant cities of Newcastle and Carlisle.

Saturday sees us leave Carlisle by coach to the Carvoran Roman Army Museum. From here our first guided walk takes us west, following the Hadrian's Wall National Trail. We ramble through moors and woodland to the hamlet of Gilsland, straddling both counties of Cumbria and Northumberland. The ancient path continues along a section of the wall, uphill along the River Irthing, with panoramic views en route to the Birdoswald Roman Fort for a spot of lunch (at own cost). Leaving chocolate box scenery, our guide points out more remarkable aspects, such as Banks East Turret, an imposing and well-preserved turret with adjoining stretches of the Wall.

Our shorter walk on Sunday morning, takes us to the unspoilt village of Hesket Newmarket. The path meanders through fine fells, following a portion of the River Caldew and a charming limestone gorge to the peaceful village of Caldbeck.
