4 minute read

Can you remember the last time you took a minute to be present? To fully appreciate the here and now? Or do you struggle with being in the moment?

Like reading a book and having to read a page over and over because your mind keeps wandering. Or having a conversation whilst scrolling on your phone. Leaving you struggling to truly understand what the other person is trying to communicate to you. Ever find yourself walking into a room and completely forgetting what you went in for? You are not alone!

Connection Needed

We are so over-stimulated, overwhelmed and under pressure. But in today’s world, when life is often a flurry of emails, rushed encounters and looming deadlines, we need connection more than ever.

Did you know that a lack of social interaction can have a significant impact on your mental health, leading to stress, low self-esteem, insomnia or even an increased risk of substance abuse?

So with ‘Mental Health Awareness Week’, we got to thinking about how much better we feel when we connect, really connect, with others. And how beneficial connecting is to our overall wellbeing.

A change of environment

That’s why the very nature of solo travel could be our saving grace. It allows us the time and space to take a break from the everyday, opening us up to new opportunities to connect. And whether that’s meeting new people or discovering new places, changing our environment might be the key.

“I felt very empowered after and see it as a holiday totally for me, with the option of sharing experiences with others.” Sarah

Connection comes in many forms when you’re away from home. It could be sharing life stories at the side of the pool, catching someone’s eye as you both experience something incredible for the first time, or simply connecting with nature as you sink your toes into the sand or wander through vast landscapes. Sometimes it’s just about reconnecting with yourself…

“It did wonders for my confidence and my wellbeing and helped me find a little bit of the old me. I felt a massive sense of achievement, it put a spring back in my step and honestly helped me to reconnect with myself in ways I never imagined!”  Lucinda

All in the same boat

And whilst the prospect of solo travel might be a jump out of your comfort zone, know that it can also be one of most liberating things you can do. Checking in at the airport, knowing what to pack, meeting people for the first time – it’s a lot, we get it! But you won’t be doing it alone…

“Yes, the first time is nerve-wracking but once you arrive and see that Solos board held up, they scoop you up and care for you beautifully. I’ve made lifelong friends through my trips and they are also great fun!” Sandra

A safe space

Our ‘Solos Travel Circle’ is a great way to connect with like-minded people, where you’re welcome to reach out or watch from the side-lines. Whatever you feel comfortable with, our wonderful online community is a safe space to support each other.

“The forum, with its posts and positivity, has given me something to look forward to in the future.” Sarah

“Everyone in the Circle are so friendly and give you so much encouragement.” Hayley

“Love the feel of fellowship and support given by the group members.” Liz

How a Solos holiday could help you connect like nothing else:

It allows you to make a fresh start

You can share as much or as little as you like with the group

You’ll meet people that have similar life experiences

It’s a great way to climb out of your comfort zone

You’re more likely to find the confidence to mix when you’re amongst like-minded individuals

So people – let this be a reminder to connect, however that looks for you. There’s no shame in admitting you’re nervous, overwhelmed by simple tasks or apprehensive about mixing with others. Just know that there are others in the same boat.
