What’s National Walking Month?

Free, easy and convenient, walking is one of the best habits you can develop. May is Living Streets’ National Walking Month. Living Streets (livingstreets.org.uk) is the UK charity for everyday walking, and this month it is encouraging people to walk for 20 minutes every day.

According to the NHS, which recommends 150 minutes of weekly exercise, it is also one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Done regularly, a short brisk walk can help build stamina, burn excess calories, aid sleep and reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes or a heart or circulatory condition.

Sociable walking breaks with Solos

Does a week of guided walks and hikes among the rich green scenery of the Peak District or the rugged peaks of Slovenia whet your appetite? Walking in a group is a great way to start walking, make new friends and stay motivated. Our holidays are designed for all levels of ability and graded from ‘beginner’ to ‘advanced’ so you’ll never be left behind.

In the UK we offers exclusive short, and longer walking and rambling breaks in the Peak District, the Cotswolds and Yorkshire. Our experts have chosen the trails for their beautiful scenery and these countryside pockets are a joy to discover in the spring, summer and early autumn. There’s nothing like resting weary feet in the garden of a pub, or a countryside hotel, and sipping a well-earned G&T with new friends at the end of day’s walking.

If you’d like to stretch your legs overseas Solos has a range of exciting walks in Cadiz in Spain, Lake Garda in Northern Italy, and the lakes and mountains of Slovenia. Whether you’re ambling along the picturesque Cotswold Way, around the shores of Slovenia’s Lake Bled, past the magnificent Fountain’s Abbey in Yorkshire or along the clifftops of Spain’s Andalusian coast, all of our walking holidays are accompanied by a dedicated guide and an experienced, friendly Tour Leader who is there to make sure you have the best time possible.

With beautiful walks, excellent hotels and a ready-made group of companions, you can book in the knowledge you will experience an all-bases-covered active break.

You’re in great company

Everyone arrives as an individual and all guests are in same boat. And you get your own room! Solos really is unique.

Your Tour Leader is always on hand from beginning to end – sweating the detail so that you don’t have to. All you need to do is put on a pair of well-fitting walking boots and go!

What to pack

Walking is the least cumbersome activity out there. For a walking holiday you may want to consider the following:

A pair comfy pair of walking boots, with ankle support, and preferably boots that are already worn in

Appropriate boot socks

Layers for cooler and warmer weather – nothing too bulky – and base layers in breathable fabrics

Waterproof jacket

Comfortable, seam-free trousers and ideally waterproof

A lightweight, waterproof daypack

Sunglasses, a hat and sun cream

A water bottle and possibly energy snacks
