“A glass of Alsace wine is like a summer dress or a flower in spring, it’s the ray of sunshine that simply makes life brighter.”

Christian Dior

We can’t think of anyone better placed to bring the beauty of Alsace to life than one of our own. Well-travelled and completely invested in the freedom of solo travel, Anna just couldn’t keep schtum on her wistful journey through what is known as one of the most picturesque villages in the world. She was enticed to book a trip after coming across an abundance of articles on the region, and it was to be one of the best decisions she ever made…

“I’d read that the local culture was a mix of French and German influence, which resonated from the architecture and cuisine. That made perfect sense, with Alsace so close to the Swiss and German border.

But as I strolled through the quaint and ever so quiet cobbled lanes and alleyways, surrounded by half-timbered houses and flamboyantly coloured flower boxes, it felt like so much more than that. Like I’d been transported back in time.

Everything, from the taste of the ‘tarte flambée’ (French pizza), to the sight of the bridge at Rue des Ecoles, and a walk in Petite Venise in the city of Colmar, was a thing of beauty.

As I travelled through the Alsace wine route to sip on something local in Obernai, I was absolutely captivated by the idyllic landscape of picturesque villages, distant medieval castles and traditional vineyards. What a place this was.”

With Solos tours planned for July and September, you can experience your very own Alsatian fairy tale. Anna gives us her take on the areas Solos guest will venture to…

Colmar

“Though smaller, if you want to get the Venice vibe in France, with its beautiful canals and waterways, Colmar is the place to go. I was amazed just how much of the medieval and early Renaissance architecture in the centre had been so well preserved.”

Eguishiem

“Nestled in amongst the rolling vineyards of Alsace, I felt as though I had gone to sleep and woken in a fairy tale village. The little train ride through made me feel like a child again. The old houses were so beautiful, colourful and well-kept. I felt like I was in a living museum.”

Strasbourg

“Not quite France and not quite Germany. Something wonderfully different. I did not expect to be able to take such a pleasant boat ride around the canals of the city. And the Ponts Couverts and Vauban Barrage area was a hidden gem. The mighty Cathedral was breath-taking and the stunning entrance, with its myriad of decorative arches. Climb the tower for stunning views!”
