Our adventure kicks off in Chennai, the ‘Gateway to the South,’ where we’ll dive into the rich cultural tapestry of Southern India. Chennai, formerly Madras, welcomes us with open arms and invites us to explore the Mylapore Temple, Fort St. George Museum, and St. Mary’s Church. But that’s just the beginning.
Next, we set our sights on Kanchipuram, the ‘Golden City of Thousand Temples.’ The air is filled with spirituality as we visit Ekambareshwar, Kailashnath, Kamakshi, and Varadarajaswami temples – architectural marvels dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. And let’s not forget the exquisite hand-woven silks that grace this ancient city.
Mahabalipuram awaits with its fascinating rock carvings and temples, including the awe-inspiring Arjuna’s Penance and the timeless Shore Temple. As we venture to Pondicherry, the former French colony, we’ll immerse ourselves in the unique blend of Indian and French influences that paint this coastal city.
A highlight of our journey is the visit to the Aurobindo Ashram, a spiritual oasis in Pondicherry. Then, we move on to Tanjore, known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu,’ where we’ll explore architectural masterpieces like the Brihadeeswarar temple, a testament to Chola art and architecture.
The adventure continues with visits to Trichy and Srirangam Vishnu temple before we reach Madurai, home to the magnificent Meenakshi Temple. Witnessing the grand processions and ceremonies, we’ll feel the heartbeat of this Dravidian-style temple.
The highlands of Periyar beckon, offering a glimpse of wildlife in its tropical landscape. A nature walk takes us through lush greenery, and spice plantations reveal the secrets behind cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, coffee, and tea.
Prepare for a serene interlude as we cruise the tranquil backwaters of Kerala on traditional Kettuvalloms. Overnight on these houseboats, surrounded by the Venice of the East, promises an unforgettable experience.
Kumarakom invites us to unwind by the Vembanad Lake, and Cochin opens its historic port, revealing the maze of narrow streets and merchants’ houses. We’ll be treated to a mesmerising Kerala Kathakali classical dance show, a perfect finale to our Southern India odyssey.
As we bid farewell to this enchanting journey, we reflect on the memories forged and friendships made. Our accommodation, from Radisson to Lakes and Lagoons Houseboat, ensures comfort throughout, ensuring you’ll rest easy after each day of exploration.
