Sofia is Bulgaria’s pleasingly laid-back capital with a scattering of onion-domed churches, Ottoman mosques and stubborn Red Army monuments that lend an eclectic, exotic feel, whilst Plovdiv is a melting pot of cultures and influences. Join your fellow solo travellers and accompanying Tour Leader on this great value, culture-themed city break as we explore the magnificent historical landmarks of these fascinating cities.
Extras
After landing at Sofia airport, meet your Solos Tour Leader and local guide and transfer to our centrally located hotel. After a short break and welcome drink, we join the walking tour of the historical centre of the city, visit the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, Basillica St. Sofia, Parliament square, National Theatre, Royal Palace, Rotunda St. George, Banya Bashi Mosque, Sofia Synagogue and more.
In the evening, we feast on dinner in a local modern restaurant with nice contemporary, yet traditional meals.
After breakfast we will visit Rila Monastery – the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria and listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is Bulgaria’s most famous monastery that has been a spiritual centre for over 1000 years. Rila Monastery’s fortress-like complex engulfs 8800 sq. m, and within its stone walls we’ll find remarkably colourful architecture and religious art. You can’t fail to be struck by its elegant colonnades, archways striped in black, red and white, and the bright yellow domes of its main church, beneath which dance apocalyptic frescoes. All this splendour, against a backdrop of mist-swirled mountains, has made Rila Monastery hugely popular among both pilgrims and curious visitors.
After light lunch we will return to Sofia.
The rest of the day is free for you to explore Sofia independently. In the evening, we will enjoy dinner at local restaurant.
After breakfast at our hotel we will transfer to Plovdiv, the second city of Bulgaria, where we will visit the most remarkable landmarks from the antiquity. Before the tour of the city, we visit a local family and their restaurant, where we enjoy lunch.
Next is the tour of Plovdiv! The oldest city of Europe offers amazing cultural-historical monuments, including a visit to the Ancient Roman Theatre, Stadium and Odeon, a stop-off at the Old Town (a UNESCO site), and we also explore ‘The Trap’ – a vibrant little district with the best cafés and art shops). In the late afternoon, we return to Sofia and to our hotel.
In the evening, we gather for a farewell dinner together.
After breakfast, we’ll have some more free time to explore Sofia further before transferring to the airport for our return flight home.

We suggest a Group Collection to cover guides, transfer drivers, and hotel staff of minimum £15.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.
