Arrive at Zakynthos Airport and transfer to the Angela Studios

  • Accommodation 2 * Angela Studios
  • MEALS No meals included

The first hike is a beautiful route on narrow paved lanes through lemon groves and vineyards. Immediately after leaving our accommodation, you’ll be walking underneath the shade of ancient olive trees. In the distance you will be able to see the spire of the small Ano Gerakari church, proudly built on top of a hill. This summit is our goal. We take a shaded path which meanders uphill and with every step the views become more spectacular.

Once in the village of Ano Gerakariwe continue to follow the road up and eventually arrive at Saint Nikolas church, with it’s amazing 360° panoramic view. To celebrate our achievement, we can stop for a well-earned drink before we head off to the coast. Our route follows narrow pathed roads meandering through olive groves.

Once we arrive at the tiny harbour of Kalvos we immediately board our own private boat which will take us to Saint Nicolas port, where we can enjoy our lunch at a beach front taverna (own expense). After lunch we hop on our boat again and set off to Shipwreck Beach, the highlight of the island which will be on everyone’s bucket list. This secluded cove with the azure blue sea, can only to be reached by boat, the famous smugglers ship rests on the snow-white beach and has become the picture postcard of Greece. On our return, we’ll pass by the Blue Caves, the brave ones amongst us can jump in and swim around the caves, renowned for their crystal-clear waters. We then head back to land and back to our accommodation in time for us to have our first included evening dinner at a local Taverna

  • Accommodation 2 * Angela Studios
  • MEALS Breakfast & Dinner included

After breakfast, we’ll be picked up and taken to the hidden valley of Loucha. First, we’ll stroll through fields of wildflowers where the scent of thyme, oregano and aniseed dominate the air. Walking unpaved paths through a forest of tall cypress trees, we’ll leave civilisation behind us with only the silence as our companion. A descending trail, with spectacular views over the entire island, ends at the ancient central road, now overgrown and forgotten. The trail ends at the ruins of the hidden village of Old Lagadakia, where time has stood still since it was abandoned after the earthquake back in 1953. The buildings are covered with moss and nature has now reclaimed the village, giving us a fairy tale scene of serenity and beauty. The narrow road zigzags down to New Lagadakia, built below on the fertile plain. Here, Tassos, the proud owner of his taverna will show us some traditional recipes, which he will prepare and cook for our included lunch (drinks extra) where we can eat together at a long table set underneath the lemon trees. Luckily Tassos specialises in making his own wine and we can taste his pride from the barrel. After lunch we will be brought back to our accommodation at Alykanas.

The peninsula of Vassilikos is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Slopes covered with anemones, gladioli, cyclamens, irises, tulips and lilies . When we look up, we will see hovering warblers and buntings. Below is the turquoise sea under the protection of the Maritime Park. We start on the east side of the peninsular where the path winds up to the summit of the Vounos, with views across the sea, with the Peloponnese just above the horizon. We then make our long way down and pass unique clay formations, playfully shaped over the years by the wind and waves. Our final destination, is the protected sandy beach of Gerakas, the habitat of the Caretta Caretta loggerhead turtles. After lunch (own expense) we have an opportunity for a fresh dip in the sea, we will then return to our home in Alykanas.

  • Accommodation 2 * Angela Studios
  • MEALS Breakfast included

Today this spectacular walk begins on the west coast edge of the island where the dramatic high limestone cliffs drop down into the dark blue waters of the Ionian Sea. For those with a feel for heights, can have a peek over the edge of the bluff and take some fantastic cliff top photographs. We then follow the traditional goat herder trail that meanders upwardswhere just after the summit of Mt Skopossuddenly a spectacular panorama greets us, spanning over the south side of the island with the bay of Laganas. Via a walk along the coast line of Marathia we’ll finish in the small harbour of the village of Limni Keri. Here we rest and have lunch (own expense)

After lunch, we board our private boat and explore the spectacular south coast and the Keri caves. Next stop is the uninhabited island of Marathonisi. From a distance, we can see the greenness of the rich and lush vegetation this island holds. The outline of the island resembles the shape of a turtle. Coincidentallythe beach of ‘Turtle’ island is also the breeding ground for the Caretta Caretta sea turtle. After some turtle spotting, we then head back to harbour and return by transfer to our accommodation.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fit and well enough to take part in your chosen activity holiday. If you are unsure as to whether the walks are within your capabilities, please contact the office to discuss this matter, thus making sure you appreciate the terrain that you will be walking.
You could be walking across uneven ground in some areas and extreme care must be taken, especially if wet. If used to using a pole/stick, it is advisable to bring it. Please appreciate the route and content of the holiday may change at the time and at the discretion of the guide/organiser, should conditions require. Solo’s Holidays Ltd cannot be held responsible for personal injury, accident or damage to property whilst on these walks other than incidents arising out of the company’s negligence. The guide has the right to refuse to guide a walk with anyone not properly attired.

What to Wear
It is important that you have the correct footwear. It is essential to wear walking boots that are comfortable and preferably lightweight, with some ankle support and a good grip. If you already have a pair of boots that you are happy walking in (including during hot/wet weather and on hard ground), then bring these along. However, if you are bringing new footwear, do make sure they are well broken in before you arrive.
The weather, even in summer, can be unpredictable. We would therefore recommend you travel with clothing suitable for all conditions, and suggest you use the following checklist as a guideline of what to take:
  • Walking boots with good ankle support
  • Waterproofs – jacket and trousers
  • Walking poles – recommended as they provide good support for the knees, particularly on downhill sections of walks and when conditions are wet/slippery
  • Lightweight trousers and shorts with pockets
  • Shirts or t-shirts for walking in
  • Walking socks – several pairs
  • Lightweight fleece or jumper
  • Hat & gloves
  • Daysack/rucksack for walking
  • Umbrella – it can be used also for protection from the sun as well as rain
  • Lightweight drinking bottle to carry water whilst walking
  • Small first aid kit – plasters, insect repellant, etc
  • Good, high factor sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses – the sun’s strength is often multiplied in mountainous areas.
