Beautiful view of the historic city of Salzburg with Festung Hohensalzburg in winter, Salzburger Land, Austria.

Birthplace of Mozart and one of the most famous carols of all time, Silent Night, you’re guaranteed music on a festive break in Salzburg. The Christkindlmarkt on Cathedral Square is the oldest in Austria and the windows at Hellbrunn Palace are turned into a huge advent calendar. The focus here is on quality over quantity, so expect hand-knitted socks rather than novelty candles for stocking fillers at this winter wonderland.

Itinerary

View full itinerary

After arriving at Salzburg Airport, we’ll proceed through immigration and collect our luggage before heading to our hotel in Salzburg. In the evening we will gather for a welcome drink and dinner at local Austrian restaurant.

  • Accommodation 4 * Salzburg Dorint-City Hotel
  • MEALS Dinner included

After breakfast at the hotel will go on a guided walking tour to explore Salzburg city centre and a Christmas Market.

We will start our tour at Mozart’s Residence before visiting Mozart’s Birthplace.

At Mozart Residence (Mozart Wohnhaus) we will learn about the Mozart family dynamics, including Wolfgang’s sister who was also an accomplished musician. There are many original objects from the family estate, including an original piano.

Our next stop is Mozart’s Birthplace (Mozarts Geburtshaus), the house in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. Salzburg’s most famous son came into this world on 27 January 1756. His family actually lived here for 26 years, from 1747, occupying an apartment on the third floor. With parents Leopold and Anna Maria as well as sister “Nannerl”, Mozart spend his childhood and much of his youth there. In 1773, the family moved to the house we know today as the “Mozart Residence”, in Makartplatz Square.

We will finish off our tour at the famous Salzburg Residenz Square with it’s beautiful Christmas market. It is the oldest Christmas market in Austria: the combination of the beautiful setting, the delicious food, and the absolutely gorgeous stands make Salzburg’s Christmas market unforgettable.

  • Accommodation 4 * Salzburg Dorint-City Hotel
  • MEALS Breakfast included

Today is free for you to spend however you wish. Relax at the hotel or explore Salzburg’s historical sights or browse Christmas Market stalls that look much as they did when they were first set up way back in the 15th century.  Sip on some steaming Glühwein (mulled wine) and nibble on some Kletzenbrot, Austrian fruit bread, while you soak it all in.

Festive markets in the Austrian city have been taking place since the 15th century, and the largest is held on Cathedral Square where choirs regularly perform outside the Cathedral. Smaller markets can be found around the city like the postcard-perfect one in Hellbrunn Courtyard or the smaller but equally charming market in the Hohensalzburg Fortress with views of the sparkling city below.

For optimum Christmas cheer, join the free daily concerts at 5pm in front of the cathedral.

Or visit Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. It is situated at an altitude of 506 m and has incredible views.

  • Accommodation 4 * Salzburg Dorint-City Hotel
  • MEALS Breakfast included

After breakfast we’ll have some free time to buy some souvenirs before the afternoon transfer to the airport for our return flight home.

The transfer time from Salzburg Airport to your hotel in Salzburg is approximately 20 minutes, depending on the traffic.

We suggest a Group Collection to cover guides, transfer drivers, and hotel staff of minimum £15.00 per person. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate % to add on.
